Breaking: Rami, Tobey Gone, “Spider-Man” Series To Reboot!

It looks like Sony is kicking director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire to the curb. According to a press release (via Deadline Hollywood), the studio has decided to reboot Spider-Man and take Peter Parker back to his high school days. Looking at how great recent reboots have been — 007, Batman and Star Trek come to mind — it makes since to relaunch the franchise. Especially when you consider how god awful the last installment in Raimi’s Spidey series ended up being. Here’s some of that press release:

Peter Parker is going back to high school when the next Spider-Man hits theaters in the summer of 2012. Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios announced today they are moving forward with a film based on a script by James Vanderbilt that focuses on a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises.

More news as we get it, but for now it’s time to look at who could play Spidey. What about Reece Thompson from Rocket Science and Assassination of a High School President? As for a director, why not hand the keys over to Alfonso Cuaron. Children of Men was spectacular and he delivered when given one of the Harry Potter books to direct. We also don’t need it to be another origin story. Everyone understands the story, so hit the ground running. Regardless, the way Sony has handled this franchise this reboot is probably a horrible idea.

Anyway, just a huge, huge story that we will definitely revisit often here in the near future (Casting Couch!).
