10 Actors Scorsese Should Work With

I know it seems like Martin Scorsese is ancient, but in reality he’s only 67. His folks both lived to see 80, so he should be around for quite some time. Additionally, he seems hellbent on continuing to be a filmmaker for as long as he’s alive, a la Clint Eastwood and Robert Altman. Since we’re fortunate enough for Scorsese, one of the greatest American directors ever, to still be making movies, here’s 10 actors we’d love to see him work with for the first time.

Denzel Washington

Could you imagine if Scorsese directed American Gangster? Given the way they’ve both dominated the crime genre, this is a natural marriage that needs to happen at some point.

Benicio Del Toro

The Wolfman flop aside, if you’ve seen The Usual Suspects, Traffic and Che, then you know Del Toro is perfect for Marty. Just think, er, salivate over these two doing a Pablo Escobar biopic.

Javier Bardem

Two words: Anton Chigurh. After Bardem’s movie-stealing performance in No Country for Old Men, he has to be on the Italian Filmmaking Stallion’s short list of actors to work with.

Christopher Walken

Along with the the terminally ill Dennis Hopper — and that breaks our heart! — Walken is one of the few people not named Nicholson who could have nailed the Frank Costello part. Marty needs “more cowbell.”

John Turturro

How in the hell has this not happened? Sure, you briefly see him in Raging Bull, but that shit doesn’t count. Match. Made. In. Heaven.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Harvey. Bobby. Leo. It’s about time for Marty to find himself a new apprentice. Why not go for arguably the finest twenty-something actor in the game?

Philip Seymour Hoffman

I think a lot of cinephiles will be crushed if these two don’t work together before it’s all said and done. The P.T. Anderson favorite would rock in a Scorsese flick.

Brad Pitt

After seeing Pitt work with Quentin Tarantino, this should be the next milestone on his bucket list. Not sure what kind of film they wold make together, but there’s no doubt it would be epic.

Christian Bale

How freakin’ intense would this be? After Christoper Nolan rented Leonardo DiCaprio from Marty, it’s only fair that Scorsese get a crack at working with the Dark Knight.

And the big one…

Al Pacino

Whooo-ha! This just seems criminal. If Pacino has anything at all left in his tank, Scorsese could pull one last great performance out of the screaming screen legend.

There are so many other possibilities. Edward Norton. Laurence Fishburne. Gary Oldman. Colin Farrell. Johnny Depp. Who would you like to see Martin Scorsese work with for the first time?

What about Bruce Willis? I think it’s about time he started making intelligent movies again a la Sixth Sense and Scorcese is just the director to bring him in that direction. Maybe they’ve worked together in the past, but that’s no reason for them not to work together. Good list, by the way.

Philip Seymour Hoffman – I reckon this can create the best chemistry with his subtle yet sly acting

Al Pacino with Scorsese’s Raging Bull man Robert Deniro ?

I absolutely love every person in your top ten EXCEPT Christian Bale. If you’re gonna put a no talent actor on the list, you might as well go for Keanu Reeves or Vin Diesel… both would be better choices. Diesel actually played a very good gangster in the under-appreciated Lumet film, “Find Me Guilty”. Everyone else tho is spot on! As for me, I’d like to see Marty work with Ed Norton for sure, Giovanni Ribisi, Mickey Rourke, for some reason Sam Rockwell, Tom Hanks in the right project, maybe James Franco, and it sounds terrible but Ben Affleck. Affleck, although not tough, has always played a good “fast-talker” and I think that could translate well into a gangster film.
