SyFy Picks Up…WWE Smackdown? WTF?
From the WTF? department, the channel that typically brings us stuff like the world of Battlestar Galactica and cheesy SyFy original movies has ventured into…professional wrestling? That’s right, this October SyFy will start airing WWE Smackdown on Tuesday nights. Apparently, this will be the home of the show until NBC Universal kicks of the WWE Network, probably in 2011.
Does that mean we’ll get to see some cheesy CGI megashark thingy take on a CGI Ultimate Warrior? Maryse vs. Starbuck? Gaius Baltar as some sort of Jimmy Hart heel manager?
This move really doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, but neither does MTV airing basically no music now that I think about it. It seems that cable companies are just picking up whatever programs they think can help them draw viewers, brands be damned. It’s a disturbing trend, but if you are a wrastlin’ fan — and if you are older than, say, 20 max you have no business being one — this is just Vince McMahon taking one big step towards having his own channel.
