N.W.A. Biopic Gets A Writer

The group responsible for popularizing gangsta rap is one step closer to getting a big screen treatment. The rumored film detailing the rise and fall of N.W.A. entitled Straight Outta Compton has a writer. Andrea Berloff, who penned World Trade Center, will now tackle the seedy underbelly of west coast rap music.

Talk about drama, N.W.A. had loads. Not to mention dynamic personalities like Eazy-E, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. If done right, this could end up being pretty damn good. Cube and Eazy-E’s widow Tomica Woods are producing the project, so authenticity shouldn’t be a problem, provided they’re willing to tell the whole story, including the nasty bits.

Casting will definitely be interesting. Even though he’s too old, Craig Robinson could pull off Cube. What about Dre? Too bad he portrayed Tupac in last year’s Notorious because Anthony Mackie would be perfect as the good Doctor. I guess he could play both roles, but I’m not sure Mackie wants to be typecast as the guy who plays famous rappers. Unless Big Daddy Kane gets his own flick.
