Weekend Box Office: Iron Man 2 Beats Robin Hood

Iron Man 2 managed to hold onto the top spot at the box office this weekend, despite losing nearly 60% of its audience from last weekend. With the $53 million that it pulled in this weekend, its domestic total is now $212 million and its worldwide gross tops out somewhere near $400 million.

Robin Hood, the weekend’s biggest challenger to Iron Man’s throne, came up short in its estimates, bringing in $37.1 million amidst its mixed reviews. It still looks like a big ole’ bore to me, but Ridley Scott’s name alone might get me to see it sooner rather than later.

The other new releases – Letters to Juliet (hasn’t Amanda Seyfried been in five movies exactly like this in the last year?) and Just Wright – performed relatively well, earning $13.8 million and $8.5 million respectively. Both How to Train Your Dragon (over $200 million) and Date Night continue to chug along nicely, with the Tina Fey-Steve Carell comedy looking to eventually hit $100 million.

Next week we see the release of one of the most intriguing movies of the summer in MacGruber. The skits on Saturday Night Live are some of the best things the show has going for it, so I’m pumped for the movie. Shrek Forever After also comes out next weekend, but it looks about as entertaining as giving oneself multiple paper cuts to the face.

Here are the rest of the weekend’s box office numbers:

1. Iron Man 2 – $53 M

2. Robin Hood – $37.1 M

3. Letters to Juliet – $13.8 M

4. Just Wright – $8.5 M

5. How to Train Your Dragon – $5.12 M

6. A Nightmare on Elm Street – $4.7 M

7. Date Night – $4 M

8. The Back-Up Plan – $2.46 M

9. Furry Vengeance – $2.3 M

10. Clash of the Titans – $1.25 M
