Weekend Box Office: Iron Man 2 Crushes the Competition, But It’s Not A Record-Breaker

It was the most predictable opening weekend of the year, as no one assumed that Iron Man 2 would finish anywhere but at the top of the charts. The only question was: how much would it earn? Some thought it had an outside shot at beating the opening-weekend record The Dark Knight set a few years ago ($158 million). It came up short, but certainly has nothing to be ashamed of, as it ended the weekend with the fifth-best opening weekend in history, with $134 million. When adding up the amount the movie has already earned overseas, it brings the total revenue for Iron Man 2 to a whopping $330 million.

Babies, a documentary about, well, babies, was the other new movie this weekend, and finished in 10th place with $1.58 million.

To be honest, I don’t see Robin Hood putting up much of a fight at all next weekend. It looks unbelievably generic and has that look of something we’ve seen so many times before in other films.

Here are the rest of the weekend’s box office figures:

1. Iron Man 2 – $ 134 M

2. A Nightmare on Elm Street – $9.17 M

3. How to Train Your Dragon – $ 6.76 M

4. Date Night – $5.3 M

5. The Back-Up Plan – $4.34 M

6. Furry Vengeance – $4 M

7. Clash of the Titans – $2.31 M

8. Death at a Funeral - $2.1 M

9. The Losers - $1.8 M

10. Babies - $1.58 M
