Joseph Gordon-Levitt To Play The Riddler In Batman 3?

We recently pegged Joseph Gordon-Levitt to bring back Heath Ledger’s Joker due to his involvement in Inception. It looks like we might have been getting pretty close. According to the site Hollywood Life, director Christopher Nolan could be looking at JGL to bring the Riddler to the big screen in the next installment of his Batman franchise.

Apparently, Nolan really became fond of working with the (500) Days of Summer star during their time together filming Inception. During the production, an on-set joke about JGL reading for the untitled Batman 3 project — which doesn’t even have a completely finished script as of yet, for the record — started to garner serious consideration. Now it seems that Gordon-Levitt will not only read for the part of the enigma-obsessed villain, but also is one of the frontrunners for the part.

Of course, all of this is contingent on this rumor being true. True or not, it’s sure to fuel a fanboy frenzy of speculation. The most important thing to take away from this news is that it’s looking even more and more likely that the Riddler will appear in Batman 3.

I’m just glad things are really starting to take shape in Gotham City. A definitive “no” on the Joker from Nolan. This rumor. Inception about a month away, and once its opening passes Nolan will only have bats on the brain. Joseph Gordon-Levitt would definitely be an inspired pick for the Riddler, one which could work out much like casting Ledger as the Joker did the last time around. I’ll definitely co-sign on this possibility (even though I still love Michael C. Hall of Dexter as the Riddler).

  1. Jon Dove says:

I would love to see Michael C. Hall! I am in the middle of catching up w/ Dexter and he is a great actor.

  2. Jen says:

I agree, Michael C. Hall would be great. But, I think he needs a more substantial role- something recurring. I could also see that guy from Numb3rs- David Krumholtz. Now that he’s not busy anymore…

  3. Trevor says:

dexter is typecasting a little, tho. just a little.

  4. Namdar says:

Ya! Lets have Julia Styles play Poison Ivy too! Don’t forget the rest of the 10 things I hate about you gang!

  5. Michael C. Hall is awesome, I’m happy having him in Dexter though.

  6. Scoobs McGee says:

Go see the movie Brick if you have any qualms about his acting.

  7. Gutsy Gibbon says:

    I seen Brick.

    Its Yuppy Hipster trash.

    DONT WATCH BRICK

  8. Joe says:

Johnny Depp would be the best person to take the part of the riddler

  9. Ruben says:

The last thing batman needs is “drunk acting” Johnny depp, even if the riddler has those maneurisms.

Depp isn’t the only one that can pull this off.

  10. Scottie says:

I’m all for Neil Patrick Harris as the riddler!

  11. brad says:

i would have to say i would like to see jim carrey as the riddler again

  12. Rob says:

I know it’s not gonna happen, but while watching 500 Days of Summer with a few friends, we all agreed that if you throw a bit of make-up on him, he’d be the spitting image of Leger. He’s already got many of same mannerisms, all he’d need is some voice coaching to get that perfect.

  13. YungSchizo says:

There is no other Riddler than Jim Carrey! j/k… think Hall would definitely be a better pick. plus Dexter is awesome cant wait for Inception.

  14. Pat says:

Vote 1: Tom Green, he’s crazy and perfect for the job.
Vote 2: John Cleese, also crazy, also perfect.
Vote 3: Sharlto Copley, I will cry if he’s not in the new District 9!

  15. Sam says:

@pat – No, no, and no. That whole list is horrible.

Jim Carrey is an awesome actor and funny guy but he was only good in the previous batman franchise, I don’t think he could cut it here.

Either Michael C. Hall would be good I think, or Johnny Depp. It doesn’t matter what people say, he can play very versatile roles and I think the difference is that Depp has the personality for it. He himself as a person is a bit off and I think it helps him relate to the characters he plays.

So I guess what I am saying is +1 for Depp if we get him, and any haters can flame all they want but Depp has the resume to prove he would be good for this role.

  16. [...] C. Hall from Dexter would make an excellent Riddler, and debated whether or not Inception co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt could successfully tackle the role. Now, we hear tell, via IGN, that Robin Williams revealed in a recent interview [...]
