Robin Williams Wants To Be The Riddler

We’ve got bats on the brain here at FlickSided, so whenever another rumor surrounding Christopher Nolan’s next Batman movie is circulated, we’re quick to jump all over it in smothering fashion. Especially when it involves The Riddler, who is presumed to be Batman 3’s chief villain.

In the past, we’ve donned our casting hats and suggested Michael C. Hall from Dexter would make an excellent Riddler, and debated whether or not Inception co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt could successfully tackle the role. Now, we hear tell, via IGN, that Robin Williams revealed in a recent interview with Empire Magazine that he would love to play the man in the question mark costume.

Of course, Williams and Nolan have a history with Insomnia, so it’s possible the manic actor-comedian could be considered. However, the way Williams delivered his plea has me thinking he had tongue firmly planted in cheek:

“I would work with Chris again in a second, playing anyone in anything. I’d play The Riddler in the next Batman, although it would be hard to top Heath [Ledger] as the villain, and I’m a little hairy for tights… I’m using this article as an ad. Chris, call me, I’ll do anything. I could be a great character – or some weird little man in the background in Arkham Asylum.”

Williams is often tough to read during interviews. I can envision him gesticulating wildly with a goofy smile plastered on his face and not being serious at all. Then again, he could be positioning himself for the role. Ya never know with Robin. He’s zany like that.

I think Williams could definitely do The Riddler justice. He’s excelled at creepy in One Hour Photo and the aforementioned Insomnia, although my suspicion is Nolan will cast someone younger. Pegging Williams, who is 58, would be similar to when Tim Burton tabbed Jack Nicholson, then 52, to play The Joker in the 1989 Batman.

I just don’t see Nolan going in that direction. Not to mention The Riddler hasn’t even been confirmed as Batman 3’s baddie. At any rate, this is one more tidbit to ponder until Nolan begins ramping up for the next chapter in the Dark Knight saga.

I sure think Robin Williams is crazy enough to be the riddler, however I don’t see him being too frightening. Although the movie where he was a voyeur was terrifying!

If only we could have a young Robin Williams as the Ridder…He could still do it though, he has a dark side.

Jim Carrey is the real Riddler. No one can replace him!!!

  8. Bob says:

Robin Williams could easily pull off a weird little character in Arkham Asylum. It wouldn’t be acting, though.

  9. lupedog says:

All I have to say is that it is a heck of alot better then their original actor for the part, Eddy Murphy, im sorry he would have been terrible. Robin Williams is alittle twisted as the riddeler should be, thats why Jim Carrey was good at the part.

  10. M3i says:

Robin Williams isn’t the first person I’d consider for the role but at the same time I think he may well pull one out of the bag if given half a chance. Why not, go for it!!

  11. Tris says:

I think he’d be pretty good. Wasn’t he initially up for the part in Batman Forever and lost out to Carrey? Given his serious performance in Good Will Hunting, I think he could deliver sinister as well as crazy.

Robin Williams should make a cameo as the Ventriloquist/Scarface… If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you need to research Batman villains… and I think you’ll all agree…

I didn’t care for Jim Carrey as The Riddler. I watched the TV show Batman and LOVED Frank Gorshim as the Riddler. He’s too old for the role, even is he is still around, but I think Robin Willimas would make a great Riddler. Give him a chance to prove he can do it. Anyone know if Catwoman or Batgirl are to be introduced sometime in the films?

  20. dozenz says:

While it is probably too close to his most famous character, I feel that Michael Emerson (known as being Ben Linus from LOST) would be perfect for The Riddler. Just listen to him in his interviews and you could see it working.

  21. Schroeder says:

Second the Crispin Glover nod. Holy hell is that guy crazy.

  22. jerry says:

First Jim Carrey was far from anything the Riddler should be. Second Robin Williams is an amazing actor and possible can pull it off. The Riddler is narcissistic that is the key to the character. And there are three actors that I think could make this character of the Riddler great due to their acting prowess. The first being Hugh Laurie, the second being Jackie Earle Haley (his Freddy was less than great, but he is an awesom actor) and finally Colin Firth (very underrated actor).

  23. Richard says:

Robin W. IS the riddler. Whatever actor plays it, I will watch it imagining Williams playing it.

  24. Daniel says:

Not gonna happen. Chris Nolan already directly stated that Robin won’t be in Batman 3.

  25. Robin would bring some real comedic relief.

  27. Pipkin, E says:

I’m okay with Robin Williams wanting the part. I’d even be okay with him getting it.

But my preference is David Tennant.

You know, he played the 10th Doctor in Doctor Who, he’s currently starring in Hamlet with Patrick Stewart, Barty Crouch, Jr. In Harry Potter.

    Yeah, that guy.

  28. Bob says:

Robin Williams will do to Batman what Joel Schumacher did to Batman.

  29. K2 incense says:

Oh gosh, before I scrolled down I thought I read Robbie Williams eeek! Seriously though, Robin Williams would make a great Riddler.

  30. I say let him do it he has the talent to pull it off.

  31. [...] Jamie Bell would’ve been a solid choice. Oh well. Time to get back to wondering who will play The Riddler in Batman [...]

  32. Why does Robin Williams look like Elijiah Wood’s furry uncle (could’ve been Bilbo!)? He was in Insomnia, and Nolan said his performance was perfect in that film, so this really could happen.

  33. pablo says:

i don’t think the riddler should come out yet. the character of the riddler isn’t all that interesting. they should bring out killer croc along with another character. i find the riddler to be kinda gay.

  34. Robin Williams Should Lose Over 100 Lbs Before Even Being Considered For The Part.

Please Let’s Not Turn This into another Bat-Mess.

I for one am not getting any younger and My Love for Superheroes only Grows When They are played by Actors Who are devoted to the character.
