Inception Conjures Sweet Dreams At The Box Office
Good news for fans of original movies that require you to use your brain. Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated Inception raked in an impressive $60.4 million during its opening weekend at the box office. That figure nearly doubled the second-place flick, Despicable Me, which earned $32.7 million and upped its two-week total to $118 million.
The other new opening was Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. It seemed destined to flop and did so with a weekend haul of only $17.4 million; its five day total fell short of $25 million. Not good. Ninety minutes of Nic Gage eating mushrooms with his cat would’ve earned more.
Here’s how the Top 10 stacked up (Via Box Office Mojo):
1. Inception – $60.4 million
2. Despicable Me – $32.7 million
3. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice – $17.4 million
4. Twilight: Eclipse – $13.5 million
5. Toy Story 3 – $11.7 million
6. Grown Ups – $10 million
7. The Last Airbender – $7.45 million
8. Predators – $6.8 million
9. Knight and Day – $3.7 million
10. The Karate Kid – $2.2 million
Twilight and Toy Story 3 continue to hold steady, while Predators took a major tumble and lost over 70% of its audience from a week ago. I would expect Inception to keep its momentum and possibly gain some this week as positive word of mouth spreads. It’s a righteous roller coaster ride, so if you haven’t seen it yet, go now.
New to theaters on Friday will be Salt. I have no idea why a documentary about the world’s most famous spice is being released in the summer, but… oh… my mistake… it’s an action movie starring Angelina Jolie. I’m sure it will do fine.
