James Cameron To Release Titanic In 3D

James Cameron must really like money. I mean A LOT. According to the LA Times, the king of the universe director is planning to re-release his first movie to gross a billion dollars, Titanic, in April 2012 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the real ship’s sinking. In addition, the film will be converted into 3D. Naturally.

Titanic is both beloved and hated, depending on who you poll. Chicks dig it for the romance and steady stream of sappy dialogue. Guys like it when the ship breaks apart and hundreds of helpless victims are hurled into the icy sea. Others would categorize it as overblown and overrated.

I personally think it’s a good, not great, movie. Would I pay to see it in 3D? Probably not, but I’m sure masses of people will, which is precisely why Jimbo is prepping it for a return trip to theaters. Let’s face it, the dude has the Midas touch. He could repackage Drop Dead Fred and audiences would plop down ten bucks to see it.

Should Titanic bring home a hefty chunk of change in a couple years, I wonder if Cameron will toy with the notion of releasing 3D versions of Aliens, T2 and The Abyss? It would give him something to do until Avatar 2 comes out in 2020. Yeah, I know, he says it will be much sooner than that, but c’mon, it’s Cameron. He’ll string it out for years and no one will complain. Man, we really are a bunch of mindless sheep.
