Re: Angelina Jolie And “Jen” Aniston

With Salt about to drop — and mostly favorable reviews starting to surface — I wanted to set the record straight on something. I’m not sure it has gotten through to America, so I’m gonna give each one of these points its own line to make sure it registers.

Jennifer Aniston is not your friend.

Jennfier Aniston didn’t grow up next door.

Jennifer Aniston didn’t go to your high school.

Jennifer Aniston wasn’t in your big sister’s wedding.

Jennifer Aniston is not your aunt.

You do not know Jennifer Aniston.

Jennifer Aniston is not your friend.

For some reason, people in this country get so emotional over “Jen.” They even call her Jen like they know her. It’s that damn show Friends, I tell ya.

Did I watch a few episodes with various exes? Yes. Did I perhaps even chuckle a few times at Chandler’s cynicism or Joey’s dumbassedness? Of course. Overall, however, the sitcom was one of the most overrated things in American entertainment history. As a result, its biggest star, Aniston, has become America’s sweetheart. People seriously acted like they lived next door to “Rachel” on that show.

It’s “show business.” She did a show and even though she’s an actress, an artist, it was all business. No fans got to know her on a personal level and they weren’t was supposed to either. You know how we have separation of church and state? Well, we need separation of entertainment and personal lives. My mom literally won’t watch Michael Douglas because she thinks he’s an asshole. I love my mom, but that’s effing retarded. Doesn’t hurt him any, just keeps you from taking in quality entertainment.

Why do I bring this all up? Ah, yes, that smokin’ hot actress who is finally back after a Hollywood hiatus. You might know her as Angelina Jolie.

I like Jolie. I believe we need strong, sexy female leads who can actually act. Like Ava Gardner (who was also misused at times due to her beauty, but certainly talent). Like Faye Dunaway. Like Miss Jolie/Mrs. Pitt. Sure, she has done some terrible films, but she’s also done some outstanding work over the course her career. Gia. A Mighty Heart. Wanted. Changeling. Girl Interrupted. Even Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Next up is The Tourist, a remake of the French film Anthony Zimmer, starring Johnny Depp and directed by the Oscar-winning director who brought us The Lives of Others. You think they’d even screen test Aniston for that? Even out of courtesy?

Meanwhile, Aniston has been regurgitating the same role for the past decade — the same role she played on Friends the previous decade. Doesn’t matter. People like her as a person even though, once again, they don’t know her. Doesn’t matter how many bad by-the-numbers movies she makes, or how many fringe A-listers she sleeps with, they like her.

Did Jolie break up Aniston’s marriage with Brad Pitt? Hard to say exactly what happened, but Brad was a big boy and he obviously felt he made the decision he had to make. I think we’ve all made similar decisions in life, but it seems that much of this country seems intent on hating Jolie for the break-up. Hell, Brad doesn’t even seem to take much heat any longer. But Angie? Seems she’s viewed as some crazy, homewrecker who just runs around adopting babies all over the globe.

I wish I was making this up, but I heard a woman in line at the grocery store talking about how she wouldn’t see Salt because what “Angie” did. Angie? Great, now we are acting like we know her, too. This is almost as bad as having imaginary friends. Here’s the truth, again I’m gonna give each one of these points its own line to make sure it registers.

Angelina Jolie didn’t do anything to you.

Angelina Jolie didn’t peck your crush before you did in grade school.

Angelina Jolie didn’t co-star with you on The Hills.

Angelina Jolie didn’t steal your man in college.

Angelina Jolie didn’t cause your best friend to get left at the alter.

Angelina Jolie didn’t break up your cousin’s marriage.

Angelina Jolie didn’t do anything to you.

Now that we have that established, can we please stop getting so caught up in the tabloids that we mistake these entertainers for our friends and family, for our social circle? Don’t we get enough drama via our Facebook page updates? Can’t we just let the entertainment speak for itself and not give a damn about what stars do away from it? I guess a racist and woman beater like Mel Gibson might be hard to embrace at this point, but for the most part we need to just worry about what’s on the screen. We shouldn’t we care if Tom Cruise shoves crystals up his rectum as long as he puts on a good show.

Stars are going to have lives and their lives will be messy at times, just like ours. Why don’t we let them get out the dustpan while we get out the popcorn. Why don’t we judge actors and actresses based on performance — not off of paparazzi say-so? I’m going to do just that this weekend when I go see Salt and don’t even think about you know who or you know who else.  Maybe I’m the only one who longs for the days when there was still some mystery behind our biggest Hollywood stars?

I’m so glad someone finally put all this in writing. I didn’t realize I had the same disgust for people like the “because of what Angie did”, but i really do. The truth is that no one has been able to stay in a relationship with Aniston since then. It seems to me she might be quite a bit of work. And, I wasn’t there, but maybe the relationship was fizzled out before Pitt did the movie with Jolie. And, yes, no one can take someone away from you. If they left…the wanted to leave. Thanks again.

    Bravo!

THANK YOOOOU THANK YOU THANK YOOOOU!!! Thank you for having the GUTS to say what I’ve been hoping other journalists would say for over 4 years! I am going to see SALT as well, and I CAN’T WAIT! It’s a shame that one of our greatest actresses may never get the props she deserves because of people’s personal hang-ups and assumptions about her.

…Also, be prepared for the hate mail from the wacky and DELUSIONAL jennifer anuston fans!…one just got arrested for loitering near her house with duct-tape and a car with a written declaration of his love on it! Cuckooo!

It would be a whole lot easier to take your opinion on Jolie the actress or Salt the movie seriously if you hadn’t needed to link this review to Jennifer Aniston. THIS is the reason why so many people still talk about both these women and compare them and feel they know them. If the media, bloggers, tabloids would stop linking them, then people would move on to.

While you’re on your rant about separation of profession from person, you might want to fill both ladies in, particularly Jolie, whose entire ad campaign for Salt has been built around her personal life. You can’t have it both ways. If you want to be looked at for your work only, then shut up about your personal life, and stop promoting your family when you should be talking about the film.

And just so you and Kay know – there are plenty of fans of Jennifer who are sane (rather like there are plenty of Jolie fans who are not), and your “review” is simply you doing the same to Jennifer as you claim people are doing to Jolie. Let her stand on her own merits without tying her to Jennifer, her personal life promotional tour and bloggers and media talking her up like she’s the next Mother Theresa.

Oh yeah , i know what angie did, she stole norman’s dad..lol. Hey, that’s funny you heard something like that in a grocery store or anywhere. I would die laughing, if i heard a nutty women talking like that. I only heard this nutty conversation over the net, but it’s anonymous. I really wish i can see and hear somebody doing it. I probably do a take two , to make sure, my ears are not fooling me..lol.Also what kind of women are they, and what they look like.I believe tabloids are making so much money off their nuttiness and dumbness.

I think it is fine for Jolie to mention her family and interests while promoting her films, after all hasn’t Jennifer mentioned Angelina’s children by name in interviews before? Perhaps Jennifer truly needs to keep that closet clean after 5 long years. Simple googling back to 2003-4 spots martial problems for B/J and divorces happen in this country. Apparently their interests didn’t suit. Good for Brad and Angelina living their dream of a large family and giving back to the planet, they inspire many. Plus they are both good actors. I enjoy and support their work, in all areas. I cannot wait to see “Salt”.
I would enjoy Jennifer’s work more if she would step outside her comfort zone, lose the shallow-obsessed attitude with body image, and stop the references of “poor me”. That gimmick has sailed. Jennifer, give us something beyond the same bland rom-com or a product that doesn’t come on out on the date of a Jolie-Pitt drop or one you have to pose naked for to sell. Dignity goes all way, prove you are better then that.

For your information Guest Angelina DID talk about her movie Salt in ALL of her interviews. However, Jen-hag like you only look for the part she talks about her family so you can go here and there to whine to people “she only talks about her family”. Even when she talks about her family she connects the dots. Things like Brad has not seen the movie yet but he’s very supportive of my decision; Pax didn’t like it when he saw I got tied up; don’t worry, Mommy wins; Maddox couldn’t recognize her when she was disguised as a man. And you’re telling me she’s not talking about her movie. Sit down and STFU, ,okay?

  10. LenLT says:

And also Guest you’re missing the point of this article which I expect Jen-hag like you will (those like you have 2-digit IQ. How do I know that? Go to femalefirst and see it for yourself). The writer is bringing up “Jen” because that woman in the grocery store said she wouldn’t see Sald because of what “Angie” did. What did she really do that the woman didn’t wanna see it beside the fact that she “stole” Brad from “Jen”???? Henceforth, her point is do not mix an actor’s life over his acting ability. Got it?

By the way, I called you a Jen-hag even though you’ll say you’re not anyone’s side and you’re just pointing out the fact blah blah blah. Believe me, I’ve heard and seen it all. I called you a Jen-hag because you don’t believe she’s cotailed the Jolie-Pitts for 5 years.

    I Agre with Guest.

Jennifer never said nothing about brangelina it was not
ask, and then if she answer “I didn’t moved on” if she
dosen’t answer “i’ve moved one” it’s always wath
    appens once she never.
she never said “please call me the poor lonely girl”, she
didn’t ask for it, and she’s being judged for that.
Angelina has being judged for that to, it’s silly. i
don’t see why she can’t talk about her family it’s her family and she have the right to talk abou it.
I like them, the 2 are very diferent and very similar at the
same way, people just have to move on as been 5 years it’s
    time they all did already.
