RIP Party Down, You Had a Good Two Years

Like many great shows before it, Party Down was cancelled well before any of its fans were ready to see it end.  For two seasons, we were treated to the antics of Party Down Catering, with each character certainly deserving of his/her praise. The main attraction to this ensemble comedy was indeed the characters themselves, so well-written and unique that it was impossible not to like them.

From the sarcastic Henry to the vapid but oddly compassionate Kyle to Ron Donald’s always-unfortunate life, Party Down was a consistent joy to watch. By being so entertaining, it will simply have to settle for the “gone but not forgotten” stage of a sitcom.

The cancellation doesn’t come as a major surprise, with the cast getting involved in new  projects on other networks, but it still comes as a major disappointment. Jane Lynch left the show at the end of the first season, so the second season had to grow with its new dynamic, but by the end, it was firing on all cylinders. It is too bad that we will never get to see how the lives of these characters continue, but at least the show will always live on with a cult following.

If it is any consolation to Party Down, I will always put it in the company of a show like Arrested Development – a high-concept comedy with brilliant writing that ended far too early, which, in turn, makes it all the more memorable.
