John C. Reilly is joining the world of Marvel. According to a report from Deadline, the funny man from things like Step Brothers and Dewey Cox is going back to chanelling his more serious Boogie Nights and Gangs of New York side as part of the cast of the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy.
John C. Reilly will play Rhomann Dey, leader of the Nova Corps in Marvel Studios‘ Guardians Of The Galaxy, the James Gunn-directed franchise launch that stars Benicio Del Toro, Glenn Close, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, and Michael Rooker.
Guardians of the Galaxy is Marvel’s latest attempt at widening it’s reach and is directly motivated by the success of last summer’s The Avengers. But while Joss Whedon’s film featured the A-Team of Marvel’s superhero lineup, Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the more obscure titles that the studio is hoping can latch on with a bigger audience than the comic draws.
The story follows an American pilot and a group of ex-cons on an adventure across the galaxy while they’re in possession of very valuable and powerful cargo. On the surface the plot feels like Whedon’s Firefly but instead of a human crew it’s a cast of superheros no one has heard of.
It doesn’t boast well-known heroes like Iron Man or The Hulk, but it does boast a very impressive cast which may be enough to outweigh the obscurity of the comic in popular culture.
