The latest film in the storied James Bond franchise, Skyfall, was a major success. Many different factors can attribute to this success, but many point to director Sam Mendes for correcting the proverbial ship after Marc Forster’s Quantum of Solace lumbering galleon of a film stalled what seemed like a promising beginning to Daniel Craig‘s tenure as the storied MI6 agent.
Since the success of Skyfall, series producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have been very publicly working to reel the American Beauty director back to the helm of the next Bond picture and beyond. Earlier this year, Collider reported the producers job was accomplished, but a new quote [again, via Collider] could have them sweating once more.
Speaking to HeyUGuys:
In answer to the question you’re going to ask, I don’t know yet. I’m in discussion over the ‘B’ word and I won’t make any decision until this is open. It’s taken a long time to get this open and this has been my focus.
This certainly doesn’t sound definitive either way and the director has stated previously that he has no interest in returning to the franchise. Now it seems like a waiting game.
Hopefully we get an official statement soon on the matter. Skyfall had the industry buzzing (it won BAFTAs and had some even calling for a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars) and the gap from Quantum to Skyfall was a long wait. Now that the series is once again reinvigorated, one can only wish for a new 007 adventure to come to fruition a lot sooner than four years.
