Trailer: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

The first trailer was released over the weekend for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. A release date is scheduled for December 25, 2013. Twentieth Century Fox will distribute. Red House Entertainment and Samuel Goldwyn Films produced the project.

Ben Stiller directs the film from a screenplay by Steve Conrad. It is based on a short story written by James Thurber and first published in The New Yorker on March 18, 1939. It was later adapted as a book in My World and Welcome to It in 1942. A previous film adaptation was released in 1947 starring Danny Kaye and Virgina Mayo. The remake has been in development hell since 1994.

The film’s cast features Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Shirley MacLaine, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn, and Sean Penn.

Stiller plays Walter Mitty, a person who day-dreams and finds himself escaping life by disappearing in fantasies of heroism, romance, and action. When Mitty and his colleague (Wiig) find their jobs being threatened, he embarks on a journey around the globe that soon becomes an extraordinary adventure.

The best comparisons for the Stiller film, per an interview with Tad Friend, are Little Miss Sunshine or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind although Stiller tells Friend that Fox freaks out with those comparisons “because they’re spending real money and they need to sell it as a big comedy.”
