Bryan Cranston has not yet been cast as Lex Luthor in the Man of Steel sequel despite reports going viral.
It’s likely that the role is between Cranston and actor Mark Strong, who plays a villain in just about everything that he does these days. However, the rumors blew up this morning when Rolling Stone reported on an article published on Cosmic Book News.
What I’m thinking is that Rolling Stone went with it, looking for page views, without verifying the article’s authenticity. If Cranston had been cast, Warner Brothers would have issued a press release or something to make the announcement. We do know that he’s interested but no casting decision has been announced.
The report on CBN does not pass the smell test:
Bryan Cranston has been cast as Lex Luthor in what is said to be at least a six “appearance” deal (think of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury popping up in every Marvel movie in the run-up to Avengers) and may be as high as ten.
There is mention of Matt Damon signing on as Aquaman or the Martian Manhunter. Other sites that is not buying the reports include Film School Rejects and a rumor buster post from ScreenCrush. In fact ScreenCrush went out of their way to debunk the rumor since Rolling Stone picked it up and it went viral.
Normally, we would just avoid this obviously fake report but since a few legitimate news outlets have run the story (notably Rolling Stone) and we’re getting a lot of e-mails asking about it, we thought it was about time to address it. No, ‘Breaking Bad‘ star Bryan Cranston has not been cast as Lex Luthor in ‘Batman vs. Superman.’
Of course, Cranston’s the frontrunner and a deal is likely to be made soon. But that time hasn’t yet come so cork the champagne for now.
