Oscars 2014: Festival Circuit Important for Contenders

A series of tweets from AwardsDaily‘s Sasha Stone shows why the festival circuit has been very important for nearly a decade now.

What does this mean?

The Departed did not play the festivals at all. The Martin Scorsese film held its world premiere on September 26, 2006, before opening wide on October 6, 2006. This year, George Clooney is making the same decision with his World War 2 period piece, The Monuments Men. Clooney has opted against playing at any of the festivals. He is not the only one to do so. David O. Russell is not playing American Hustle at any of the festivals either.

Million Dollar Baby was the last best picture winner prior to The Departed to have won the big prize without playing the festivals.
