We are about a year away from the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past and already we may have had a major spoiler hinted at by a major star. It’s no secret that star Hugh Jackman has been in the role of Wolverine for over ten years, making him the longest tenured superhero working today.
But in talking about his latest two turns as everyone’s favorite grizzly hero, Jackman hinted that bad things might be in store for Wolverine and his run as the character may be coming to an end. Jackman had cryptic comments in his interview with MTV where he implied he’s close to retiring as Wolverine or the character may die in the latest film.
It may be the last. By the way, it didn’t hit me until three weeks before the end [of shooting ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past], because we promoted ‘The Wolverine’ and I came back on set with three weeks to go, and that’s when I went, ‘Well, who knows? Maybe there’s no more Wolverine. Maybe this is it. Who knows? Maybe. So I really made the most of those last few weeks. I enjoyed every time I put the claws on. I nicked everything off the set, so Halloween, come to me and I’ll hook you up. I keep saying it’s like two movies in one, but with the size of it it’s really three in one. It really is going to blow people away because of the story.
It sounds more like Jackman is closer to retiring than producers are to killing Wolverine but both scenarios must be considered at this point. Jackman is not a young man anymore and while he’s shown that he can clearly still hack it as Wolverine, he won’t be able to do so forever.
Marvel will eventually want a newer, younger Wolverine and the way the series is warping time, it wouldn’t be totally out of the realm of reality to see Wolverine killed, only to be rediscovered as a younger version of himself.
