It’s been a very long time since director Kevin Smith was able to come out with anything remotely respectable in his career, but after getting his passion for film back with Red State, he’s hoping his next film will revive his career. At least, that’s what the fans want to think as Smith has cast the lead role in his next film Tusk, about a mad scientist trying to turn a man into a human walrus.
Per Entertainment Weekly:
“Justin Long is the guy in the walrus suit. I needed a guy who has expressive eyes because once you’re in that suit, you’re covered. I reached out to Justin and he wrote back and was like, ‘This is awfully scary but how can we not? Let’s fall down this hole.’ So it’ll be Parks versus Long trying to answer the age-old question, ‘Is man indeed a walrus at heart?’”
Smith has implied that Tusk is going to follow inline with Red State and be yet another departure from the comedy genre for him. The director stated that once he saw the Walrus suit to be used in the film, he knew that rather than a thriller, Tusk was going to be a monster movie.
While the premise seems like a B-movie, it’s nice to see Smith at least trying to be different in a world where everyone tries to copy one another. Red State may have not been a classic but it showed off an interesting new side to a guy best known for creating Jay and Silent Bob.
Tusk is set to begin filming on October 21 with Smith eyeing Sundance as the place he wants to premiere the new film.
