We are just days away from the premiere of American Horror Story: Coven, which is the third season of the hit FX series from Ryan Murphy. But while we haven’t even seen an actual episode of the new season — despite seeing endless hours of trailers and clips — word has come down that Murphy and FX are taking about a spinoff series for American Horror Story that could be coming very soon.
According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly:
[FX president] John Landgraf and I have always spoken about that this show is ripe to spin something off, to do something different. I don’t know. We’re talking about it. I love this season, I love the cast, I love what it’s about, I love that set more than life itself.
That’s not a total confirmation that American Horror Story will be getting a spinoff on FX but it’s also not surprising that the network is thinking about growing a very popular brand and expanding it’s commitment to the series.
Already the series in it’s first two seasons has garnered critical acclaim, hauling in Emmy awards as well as drawing a massive audience on FX. The show has become a crown jewel for the network and continues the amazing relationship it has with series creator Ryan Murphy.
The reason a spinoff might happen is rooted not only in the fact that the show is popular, but Murphy has shown twice in the network’s history that he can produce a massive hit. A decade ago Murphy created Nip/Tuck for the network and after American Horror Story, it’s safe to say he has a Christopher Nolan-type relationship with FX.
Will that mean a spinoff is a hit, not necessarily. But it means we are most likely going to get one which is something fans of the series want to hear.
