This Sunday marks the return of The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror, which is probably the only thing the show has fans looking forward to these days. This particular year is special in that legendary horror director Guillermo del Toro has crafted the iconic opening couch gag for The Simpsons and spoofs on not only his own movies but horror movies from all eras.
Check out the complete del Toro directed couch gag here:
The opening gag is just about everything you could expect from del Toro has it ranges from hilariously dark to intensely creepy all in a span of three minutes.
The Simpsons have recently let their opening sequence and couch gags run very long, which seemed innovative at the time but sort of implies a lack of effort in the writing department if you need to extend the opening of your show to fill time. But there have been instances where the opening sequence has been memorable, a flash of nostalgia from the days when The Simpsons wasn’t just an awful caricature of it’s former self.
Unfortunately, the highlight of this year’s Treehouse of Horror and likely the highlight of the entire season will be this footage we’ve already seen. But even still, it’s a glimpse back to an era where The Simpsons knew how to shake things up and make innovative television.
