Vin Diesel may be a master of deception, as rumors that he’s been cast as Groot in the upcoming Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy may have been untrue all along. Despite announcing that he’s working with Marvel and even releasing a video of him on stilts apparently getting ready for the role of Groot, Marvel president Kevin Feige said today that Diesel hasn’t been cast and you shouldn’t believe the hype that he has been.
Feige was asked about Diesel’s role in Guardians of the Galaxy as in addition to Groot, it’s been speculated that the actor may too be playing the villainous Thanos. Feige laughed these questions off an noted that he has no news on Diesel’s role because the actor doesn’t yet have one.
“He’s got to keep his 50 million followers, or whatever it is, entertained,” Feige said, via ComicBook.com, “I think it’s close. I think it’s close to being official for the Groot character. But, not 100 percent yet.”
If Diesel doesn’t even show up in Guardians of the Galaxy it will go down as one of the biggest hoaxes we’ve seen yet. All this time Diesel has been heavily hinting at his role in a Marvel film, but we never did get official confirmation that he was showing up in the cast.
Instead, he may have just pulled a Manti Te’o on us and taken everyone for a joyride that was never even real. Feige notes that Diesel is close to being cast but he didn’t mention in what role, which means even if the speculation is all for nothing, it’s going to start picking back up again very soon if it hasn’t already.
