The already jam packed cast of Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron just got a little more crowded today with news that a major marvel character has been added to the cast. According to BleedingCool, Marvel has added Colonel James Rhodes to the cast of the next Avengers movie and as a result, actor Don Cheadle will be joining in on the fun.
I can be more specific about Don Cheadle and Rhodey, however. Both actor and character are certainly on the docket for the sequel. How big of a role? I wish I knew, but I’m glad he’ll be in there.
This is a huge addition to a cast that’s already bursting at the seems, and as it was pointed out, Cheadle’s character won’t be there for no reason. We have wanted to see more and more of War Machine ever since he was hinted at in the first Iron Man movie, but we have seen him take a primarily secondary role.
As the anti-Iron Man in the comic books, seeing War Machine get a bigger role in the Marvel universe is only a good thing. The question now though is does this lead to a War Machine franchise or is there something else in the works? Clearly Marvel is ready to feature the character on a bigger stage than just an Iron Man movie and we can’t wait to see what’s in store.
