Hollywood has helped pave the way for gay rights in America and we are starting to see more and more public figures come out as gay, announcing to the world that they are comfortable in their own skin. On the heels of NFL prospect Michael Sam coming out as gay, actress Ellen Page has announced that she is gay and no longer wishes to lie by omission.
“I’m here today because I am gay,” Page, 26, told the audience “And because maybe I can make a difference. To help others have an easier and more hopeful time. Regardless, for me, I feel a personal obligation and a social responsibility.”
“It’s weird because here I am, an actress, representing — at least in some sense — an industry that places crushing standards on all of us,” Page said. “Not just young people, but everyone. Standards of beauty. Of a good life. Of success. Standards that, I hate to admit, have affected me.”
Page is best remembered for her breakout role in the indie hit Juno, but she has moved on to blockbuster hits like the most recent X-Men films as well as the Christopher Nolan classic Inception. But Page admitted at Time to THRIVE that she has been in turmoil since becoming famous after starring in Juno and has had to lie about who she really is.
But Page no longer has to hide who she is, and her fans have already started to accept her with open arms. We can’t even imagine the weight that has been lifted off of Page’s chest, but she now no longer has to feel uncomfortable in her own skin and no longer has to lie about who she is.
