The Matrix prequel trilogy to be released in 2017

If you were ever wondering if The matrix was going to be getting a reboot, then today is apparently your day. While an official reboot of the film franchise hasn’t been announced, the hot rumor at the moment is that the Wachowski siblings as well as Warner Bros are eyeing a prequel trilogy that will lead up to the very first Matrix film released back in 1999.

Latino-Review scooped the story, although the rumor should be taken with a grain of salt and — as Slashfilm put it — read with a cautious eye.

Per Latino-Review:

We’ve been told that the Wachowski’s have already started the writing process with early treatments and outlines already turned into the studio. … One of the early outlines was about the birth of the Matrix and now that WB is Terminator-less, some of suits would like to explore that early world but it’s way too early and the story is still very fluid.

The idea of rebooting the franchise with a prequel trilogy is apparently being motivated by the fact that Warner Bros has no other franchises t compete with the likes of Star Wars and Marvel. While Batman vs. Superman is looking to be that franchise for Warners, the saying is ‘the more, the merrier’ and Warner Bros wants to be able to compete with multiple franchises and not just one.

If all goes as reported, the first Matrix prequel film will hit theaters in 2017, but this is assuming that the report is true. Even if the idea of a new trilogy has been kicked around, it hardly means that it will for sure be happening.
