When Frozen was released in November 2013, most imagined it would become a big success. But very few believed the film would go on to become this big. Disney’s latest animated hit, starring Kristen Bell voicing Princess Anna and Idina Menzel as Snow Queen Elsa, has gone on to gross over $1.072 billion and as a result overtaken Toy Story 3 as the highest grossing animated film of all time.
With a reported budget of $210 million, this is one of the biggest successes in recent film history and Frozen has become the tenth highest grossing film of all time as of 31 March. Having won a plethora of awards and receiving widespread acclaim from critics, it is almost guaranteed that a sequel will be made in the near future. Frozen won two Oscar awards this year for best animated feature and best original song.
However the Hollywood Reporter suggests that The Lego Movie are fierce competitors to the mantle, grossing over $400 million since its February release. With the film yet to release in several countries – releasing in Australia on Thursday and Germany next week – it would still take a big push to reach the $1 billion mark.
