NBC wants your help for Sitcoms

The problem right now with NBC is that their best sitcoms are Community and Parks and Recreation. Unfortunately, Community airs against the juggernaut on CBS that is The Big Bang Theory. I watch the NBC shows live and BBT on the DVR because these two shows, in particular, need the ratings help more so now than ever before.

Community is the little show that could. Created by Dan Harmon, the show is one of the smartest comedies on television. It’s right up there with 30 Rock with being a sophisticated comedy.

As long as more viewers turn to CBS, it will spell bad news for NBC’s Thursday night sitcoms. What will not help this fall: Thursday Night Football on CBS.

I watched the first two or three episodes of Michael J. Fox’s show with the hope that it would improve but it didn’t and so I stopped watching. This is one of the downsides of ordering a show straight to series and skipping a pilot order.

Look at the Thursday night offerings this fall. Welcome to the Family, Sean Saves the World and The Michael J. Fox Show did not make it to the start of 2014. It shouldn’t be a surprise. NBC thought that they could just go to a lineup of family comedies after airing workplace and buddy comedies for many years.

So what now? NBC wants your help. They are dubbing it the NBC Comedy Playground. The advisory panel includes the likes of Aziz Ansari, Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, Mindy Kaling, Adam McKay, Seth Meyers, Mike Schur, Amy Poehler, and many more.
