Review: Draft Day

Ivan Reitman’s Draft Day is a great film for sports buffs, especially for NFL fans, but the average moviegoer might not enjoy the movie.

Draft Day goes behind the scenes of the Cleveland Browns front office in the hours that lead up to the NFL Draft. Kevin Costner stars as Browns general manager Sonny Weaver, Jr. He has the opportunity of a lifetime after trading four first round picks in order to get the first overall pick in the draft.

Weaver’s day starts out with the news that his girlfriend, Ali Parker (Jennifer Garner), is pregnant.

Weaver must decide what he is willing to sacrifice to make the first overall pick. The Browns coach, Vince Penn (Denis Leary), is no fan of giving away the team’s future to get the first pick in the draft.

Realizing that he was tricked by the Seattle Seahawks GM into trading up for the first pick, Weaver soon takes advantage of the Jacksonville Jaguars by trading a few second round picks for their first round pick. When they reaized that the Seahawks were going to draft their quarterback all along, Weaver gets his draft picks back, much thanks to the Jaguars, and another player that will be key to rebuilding the Browns football team.

One could make the argument that Draft Day is the football version of Moneyball. It’s certainly interesting to get an idea of just what goes down in the NFL war room, albeit a fictional one.
