Amazing Spider-Man 2 is #1 for weekend

For the weekend of May 3-5, there are many different ways to spin the opening for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It’s the 14th highest May opening, and the 7th highest first-weekend-of-May opening. It didn’t quite beat Captain America: The Winter Soldier for the highest opening of 2014. It’s a success, and it justifies making another one (due June 10, 2016), but considering budget and brand, it’s not a runaway hit, at least not domestically. It’s already made another $277 million overseas, just another reminder the game has permanently changed for big-budget movies and how their money is made.

No other wide releases this week. The Other Woman can be added as evidence that Cameron Diaz is still in the top ten as far as bankable actresses go.

Between God’s Not Dead and Heaven Is for Real, I expect announcements of more faith-based films coming. The big-budget remake of Left Behind, starring Nicolas Cage and opening this October, is looking like a smarter and smarter move.

It wouldn’t surprise me to hear any day now that Rio 3 has been greenlit, although director Carlos Saldanha has said he’d like to do a Ferdinand the Bull movie.
