Godzilla conquers weekend

Godzilla managed to outdo The Amazing Spider-Man 2 for its opening weekend. The $160 million gamble from Warner Bros paid off. How was it a gamble? For one, its director Gareth Edwards has only made one other movie – the microbudgeted Monsters. Even though Godzilla is one of the most recognized brands out there, the similarly plotted Pacific Rim barely made $100 million last year. And the biggest star in the film is Bryan Cranston in a supporting role. We all love Walter White, but he didn’t exactly boost the numbers for the Total Recall remake.

They recognized the problems with the campy 1998 film and went with a more serious tone. Spider-Man 2’s falling a little faster than Sony would’ve liked, so there was room for Godzilla to make a big splash.

The other new wide release was Million Dollar Arm, which never looked like it’d be big, but Disney was hoping more for high-teens opening business. It’s there to take up screens until their tentpole Maleficent arrives in two weeks.

Neighbors held strong for a second week. It’s guaranteed $120 million domestic gross at this rate, and it could stretch its legs to $150 million if word-of-mouth is strong enough.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is going to end up around $230 million for its domestic run, but it’s already made $633 million worldwide, so don’t cry for Spidey, Argentina.

The resurrected TriStar Pictures has been specializing in co-productions on smaller movies, and they’ve found real success with faith-themed films like Soul Surfer, Courageous, Heaven Is for Real and Mom’s Night Out.
