Lucasfilm announced that Godzilla director, Gareth Edwards, will direct the first of several planned Star Wars spin-off films. Gary Whitta (After Earth, Book of Eli) will write the screenplay for the film which is scheduled to release December 16th, 2016.
“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life — join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards.
There has been a lot of speculation about the subject matter of the Star Wars spin-off films. Bounty Hunter Boba Fett is the clear favorite for many fans as being worthy of his own film. Others speculate that the spin-off films will focus on Master Yoda or a young Han Solo. The possibilities are exciting for even the most casual Star Wars fan.
With the huge success of the Star Wars expanded universe books, comic books, and video games fans have made it clear that they are hungry for more stories from the Star Wars universe. My hope is that Lucasfilm and Disney don’t overextend themselves by trying to push out too many movies too quickly and take their time with these projects.
While it is exciting to think about having a new Star Wars film in the theaters every year, that excitement would quickly turn to mass disappointment if the new films sacrifice character development and quality dialogue (you know what I’m talking about) for flashy visual effects.
Star Wars: Episode VII which is currently shooting in Abu Dhabi is set to be released December 18, 2015. To see a sneak peek of some of the exteriors, a new Star Wars creature, and to get a chance to win a role on the film see Flicksided’s announcement of the contest which is also helping raise money for a great cause.
