Variety is reporting that the Universal Pictures action film Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman, written and directed by Luc Besson, has moved it’s release date from August 8th to July 25th 2014. The speculation is that Universal wanted to get out of the way from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy release which is currently scheduled for August 1st.
On August 8th Lucy would have been up against Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) in addition to the second weekend earnings of Guardians.
On July 25th Lucy will now be facing Dwayne Johnson’s Hercules, the Cameron Diaz comedy Sex Tape, and the next in the Step it Up franchise, Step Up All In.
I usually believe when studios make last minute changes to a film’s release date that they are panicking and don’t have much faith in their own film. But in this case, moving Lucy looks like the wise move. Action fans who liked seeing Johansson in the Avengers films would probably have chosen Guardians and TMNT over Lucy, but I can see them choosing Lucy over Hercules, a comedy, and Step it It.
It will be interesting to see how Lucy does at the box office after this release date switch. Besson and Johansson seem like they could be a match made in heaven, but the “regular girl turns into warrior” plot will be tricky to pull off.
