Guests at the Hero Complex Film Festival were treated to screenings Alien and Aliens over the weekend, with star Sigourney Weaver in attendance. After the screening the actress revealed she’d be game for doing at least one more Alien film to bring closure to the story started all those years ago in Ridley Scott’s movies. She was quoted as saying -
“I feel after going to a couple of these Comic-Cons and meeting so many fans who are so passionate about the series, passionate about Ripley — that there’s more story to tell; but I don’t know how to do that. I don’t think Alien belongs on Earth popping out of a haystack, which is where I was afraid it was going to go. I feel it should take place in the far reaches of the universe where no one in their right mind would go. There are very few filmmakers that I can think of that I would want to entrust this to. But I can think of a couple.
No words of any concrete plans, but Weaver being on board with the idea is a step in the right direction. The hugely popular science fiction franchise has four installments in it where Weaver played the iconic Ellen Ripley. Joss Whedon wrote an Earth set script but that idea was nixed by Weaver. Throughout, she has been opened to the idea of another entry so long as she is fine with the story. As well, in 2002 interview, director Ridley Scott stated that a new Alien project would “be a lot of fun.” In 2008, Weaver hinted in an interview with MTV that she and Scott were working on an Alien spinoff, which would focus on the chronicles of Ellen Ripley but the continuation of Ripley’s story has not materialized.
Instead, the prequel Prometheus, was released in 2012. A sequel to Prometheus has also been announced but has yet to go into production.
