Star Wars Episode VII adds 12 Years a Slave and Game of Thrones Stars to Cast

Lupita Nyong’o who won an Academy Award for her performance in 12 Years a Slave and Gwendoline Christie, best known for her role as Brienne in Game of Thrones have been added to the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. The press release from Lucasfilm did not say what roles either actress will play in the new Star Wars film or how big of a role they would be.

I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”

It’s great to see these two women added to what is becoming an impressive ensemble cast. As someone who grew up as a young girl with the original Star Wars trilogy the more women the better I say. I loved Princess Leia but it always bothered me she was the only important woman in the first three films. Yes, Aunt Beru, Oola, and Mon Mothma all had their charms (and I’m still ticked off Mon Mothma got cut out of Revenge of the Sith) but clearly there is room for more than one important female Star Wars character in a film.

I can’t wait to find out more about the plot of Episode VII and see what roles these two very talented actresses will play.
