[Warning - spoilers ahead for X-Men: Days of Future Past]
I am a big fan of stingers – or “bonus” footage that occurs after the film has ended. They are usually a very brief scene at the very end of the credits or in between the beginning of the credits (which might have graphics from the film) and the more basic listing of hundreds of names at the end of the credits.
There aren’t any rules for stingers. Some stingers will show footage of a character from the film you just watched (in Frozen you saw the ice monster play with a tiara) while others show a teaser for the film’s sequel (such as Samuel L. Jackson appearing as Nick Fury chatting with Robert Downey Jr. at the end of the first Iron Man film).
If you stayed until the very end of the credits of X-Men: Days of Future Past you saw a stinger – but unless you were already aware of Marvel’s master plans it most likely just confused you. What was the stinger? What did it mean? Let’s take a look.
The stinger showed an isolated desert scene of a blueish/greyish young boy up on top of a sandy dune. Below him were thousands of people worshipping him as giant pryramids are seemingly making themselves. At the end of the clip we see four people on horses in the background.
Since no characters from X-Men: Days of Future Past were in the stinger I’m sure many of the people who saw it were confused. But for Marvel fans who have been tracking the progress of future films the answer was clear. Here was our introduction to Apocalypse and his four horsemen. Marvel has announced the next X-Men film will be X-Men: Apocalypse and will feature many of the stars from X-Men First Class and DOFP (Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, and Michael Fassbender). The villain they will face will of course be Apocalypse. But who is this guy?
According to Marvel’s Bio of Apocalypse he is a villain worthy of his own film. Also known as “the first one” Apocalypse is thought to be the very first mutant. His powers? What power does he not have is the better question. But regeneration seems to be the biggie. It appears he also has dabbled in alien technology.
The four horsemen should be an interesting part of the film. In the comics the horsemen rotated through a variety of both villains and good guys forced into the role by Apocalypse. Both Wolverine and the Hulk at one time were one of the four horsemen. Who will they be in this movie? We’ll have to wait until 2016 to see unfortunately.
Not much else is know about X-Men: Apocalypse but it certainly seems like a promising addition to the X-Men franchise. What were your thoughts about the X-Men: DOFP stinger? What do you hope to see (or not see) in the next installment?
