Recently we had an article about Godzilla director Gareth Edwards being hired as the first director of the planned Star Wars spin-off films. Lucasfilm is clearly serious about these spin-off films as they just announced that Josh Trank, best known for his critically acclaimed work in Chronicle, is now also attached to direct a stand alone Star Wars film.
Lucasfilm has not announced the subject matter of either of these spin-off films – which will be separate films from the continuation of the core Star Wars saga that J.J. Abrams’ Episode VII will expand upon. Fans have speculated that Bounty Hunter Boba Fett, a young Han Solo, or Yoda may be the focus of these films.
I love this move by Lucasfilm. Chronicle, which followed three teenagers after they accidentally end up with superpowers, was a smart, inventive, and fun film. Most importantly it had good character development which I think is absolutely crucial to the success of any future Star Wars film.
Before entering the Star Wars universe Trank will need to finish his The Fantastic Four reboot that should be in theaters in 2015.
