Fans of the book The Giver can all breathe a sigh of relief. The second trailer released for the film is not all in color (like the first one). The new trailer is a mix of color and black & white which is exactly what many fans of the Lois Lowry book were hoping for. A summary of the film from IMDB:
In a seemingly perfect community, without war, pain, suffering, differences or choice, a young boy is chosen to learn from an elderly man about the true pain and pleasure of the “real” world.
The choice to show one reality in black & white and the other in color reminds me of the much more subtle color changes in The Matrix where the “simulated world” was more green and the “real world” was more blue. It’s an interesting way to dramatically alter the look and feel of the film – hopefully the makers of The Giver can pull it off without it seeming too gimmicky.
The Giver stars many very well known actors including Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard, Jeff Bridges, and Katie Holmes. But I think the success of the film will be much more dependent on the lesser known actors: Brenton Thwaites (Maleficent), Odeya Rush (The Odd Life of Timothy Green), and Cameron Monaghan (Shameless). Taylor Swift also has a role in The Giver. I’m just not sure what to say about that right now other than I truly hope she does an amazing job. I believe the internet will let her know rather quickly if she does not.
Below is the recently released second trailer for The Giver. Below that is the first all-color trailer released by The Weinstein Company.
The Giver will be in theaters August 15th, 2014.
