Jake Gyllenhaal is reportedly in talks to star in Demolition, the next film from Jean-Marc Vallee. Vallee’s last film was the critically acclaimed Dallas Buyer’s Club. Demolition is still in early development, no stars are currently attached to the project.
IMDB reports the plot summary for Demolition as follows: An investment banker struggling to understand his emotional disconnect after the tragic death of his wife.
Gyllenhaal is best known for his roles in Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, and more recently End of Watch and Prisoners. He’s completed filming on David O. Russell’s comedy Nailed and has two other films (Nightcrawler and Everest) in post production. He is currently prepping for Southpaw, a boxing film from Antoine Fuqua that also stars Rachel McAdams.
I feel like Gyllenhaal has turned in a number of great performances over the years but is still not taken very seriously as an actor. He’s chosen a lot of edgy projects (End of Watch, Jarhead) in addition to more traditional Hollywood films (Prince of Persia, Source Code). Even with such an eclectic body of work Gyllenhaal tends to get more press for who he is dating than what film he is starring in.
With so many high profile films coming up for Jake Gyllenhaal it will be interesting to see if he does sign on to Demolition and if the resulting film will bring its actors the accolades Dallas Buyers Club brought to Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey.
