Variety reported earlier today that Sigourney Weaver will appear in all three planned Avatar sequels. She will be playing a different character than she portrayed in the 2009 original film as that character died in the film.
“We’re both looking forward to this new creative challenge, the latest chapter in our long and continuing collaboration,” Cameron added.
There are many initial thoughts I have to this news. #1 I love Sigourney Weaver and I think her presence will make any film better. #2 I am so glad she is playing a different character in the sequels and they are not finding some kind of magical way to bring her original character back to life. #3 I still can’t believe there are going to be three Avatar sequels.
James Cameron is still set to film all three sequels back to back to back in New Zealand (it certainly worked for Peter Jackson). The Avatar sequels are currently scheduled to come to theaters in December of 2016, 2017, and 2018. If that actually happens I will be ridiculously impressed.
I loved Avatar and I think only Life of Pi has come close to its success with 3-D. Nothing is known about the plots of the Avatar sequels but Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Stephen Lang are all attached to star in all three sequels along with Weaver.
