'22' Jumps 'Dragon 2' at Box Office

22 Jump Street was probably the most anticipated comedy sequel since The Hangover Part II, but it managed to avoid the critical drubbing H2 took. It’s a tremendous win for Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 was a bit of a surprise to come in second place. A month ago, it looked certain to prevail this weekend. Maybe enough kids saw Maleficent that parents were taking a wait-and-see approach. Maybe the marketing waited too long to get off the ground. Maybe it was just sequelitis. But a $50 million opening is nothing to be ashamed of, and it should still be big overseas.

All the teens girls who wanted to see Fault in our Stars did so last week, as last week’s #1 movie fell to fifth. Edge of Tomorrow‘s drop wasn’t bad, but its way behind where it wants to be domestically.

X-Men‘s dropping at a respectable pace. Everything else is just waiting for a couple more big summer releases to blow them off the screen.
