We know J.J. Abrams is hard at work filming Star Wars Episode VII around Harrison Ford’s injury, but word has already come down that Episode VIII, not due in theaters until at least 2017, has found its director in Rian Johnson. Deadline.com has reported that he will write as well as direct. Indications are that he will also write and direct Episode IX.
Johnson made his name in the indie scene with the low-budget high-school noir drama Brick, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but his most recent success was 2012’s Looper, the sci-fi time-travel film starring JGL and Bruce Willis. Johnson has also dabbled in TV while looking for his next movie project. He directed three episodes on Breaking Bad, including the “Ozymandias” one, the best episode on the best television show this decade.
(Makes one wonder if Joseph Gordon-Levitt wants to travel galaxies down the road…)
