How to Train Your Dragon 2 is one of the few sequels that improves upon the original film.
Four years after the release of the first film, the franchise is back in an exciting and emotional adventure. Beautifully animated, the newest installment is one of the best animated films of the year. Without much competition for animated fare this summer, it will draw in the money at the box office.
Written and directed by Dean DeBlois, the film returns Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller and Kristen Wiig in the voice cast while adding Cate Blanchett, Djimon Hounsou and Kit Harington to the cast.
Taking place five years after the first film, Hiccup and Toothless have discovered new worlds, dragons, and cultures. After being attacked by dragon trappers, Hiccup seeks out Drago Bludvist only to discover a sanctuary for dragons when he his kidnapped by a strange figure, which turns out to be none other than his mother, Valka.
Soon, while searching for his son, Stoick the Vast is reunited with his long-lost wife. Before they are able to go back to Berk, a battle between the Alphas ensue and Drago’s Bewilderbeast wins, becoming the new Alpha. Toothless, under the influence of this new Alpha, fires a plasma blast towards Hiccup. Stoick jumps in the way and is killed instantly.
Adding Hiccup’s mother to the cast and introducing us to this world where dragons are saved was a nice addition to the story and it will be interesting to see just how they will build onto that in the third film–which we know is coming. DreamWorks Animation would not just release How to Train Your Dragon unless they had a franchise in mind.
Arriving at Berk on the baby dragons, Hiccup is successful at disenchanting Toothless and they join the battle. Toothless challenges the Alpha with a series of blasts, freeing the other dragons from its control. Drago loses and Toothless is acknowledged as the new Alpha.
Berk rebuilds but only after it is announced that Hiccup is the new chief.
