How good is The Vampire Diaries actor, Ian Somerhalder? Some may say he would have brought so much more to the role of Christian Grey than Jaime Dornan will. But that is like writing a baseball article on a trade that might have been. It will get us nowhere and we will just be spinning our wheels. Watching Somerhalder, you can’t help but be impressed by his screen presence. Personally, I don’t like The Vampire Diaries. It is too much of a teenaged soap opera, a CW specialty. But playing Damon, the evil older brother of Stefan, as played by Paul Wesley, Somerhalder chews the scenery with a quiet menace. Plus, he is dating co-star Nina Dobrev, or maybe he isn’t. Whereas fan support has always been there, the show has gained in critical acceptance.
Somerhalder has previous experience on popular TV. In 2004, he was cast as Boone Carlyle, stepbrother of Maggie Grace’s Shannon Rutherford, in JJ Abrams hit TV show Lost. Despite his character’s death in the latter part of the first season, Somerhalder returned to the role of Boone for seven more appearances, including the series finale. Somerhalder was one of the first actors to be cast in the series and the first major character to die. An ensemble cast, Somerhalder never really had a chance to truly show off his abilities.
His filmography offers very little in the way of anything. The two exhibitions of his talent are television shows. One, The Vampire Diaries, has its moments and Somerhalder takes full advantage of them, whereas Lost had more contrived plot twists than a Mexican soap opera. It will be interesting to see where Somerhalder’s career goes from here. A philanthropist, he has an active pursuit outside the film world. Whether or not he places much of a focus on his acting career, only time will tell. Big movies will not be where he will succeed. That much is abundantly clear.
