The comedian and the quarterback.

I’ve always been an enormous Paul Rudd fan. Unlike a lot of comedic actors (Ahem. Steve Carell. Ahem), Rudd doesn’t have to deliberately act like an ass in order to be funny. He can elicit laughs with just a look, or roll of his eyes. His new movie, writer/director James L. Brooks’ How Do You Know, opens Friday. It looks interesting only because of Rudd’s involvement. But a love triangle plot with Reese Witherspoon and Owen Wilson sounds, uh, potentially awful.

In addition to my fondness of film, I’m also a pro football nerd. There’s no shortage of drama in the NFL especially when it comes to the love ‘em or loathe ‘em Dallas Cowboys. If you haven’t been following, their 2010 season has been a comedy of errors, filled with injuries, firings and unrealized expectations. I’m of the belief it would make an excellent big screen romp.

And who better to play the role of Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo than Rudd? Romo is a smug doofus who lands tons of hot chicks; he’s very hateable, but doesn’t lack charm. I envision Rudd nailing the part. Think Brian Fantana without the stache.

Rudd oozes douche, but in a good way. Hell, he’d probably go a long way in improving Romo’s image, which has never been particularly stellar. A Cowboys flick starring Rudd sounds like a smashing idea.

Typically, my Casting Couch features (and pretty much all of the ones that appear on the site) have been for the fellas, but since Knight and Day dropped today I figured I’d do something different. This Casting Couch is going to be for the ladies. I’m probably going to get e-kicked in the junk for this by the trolls, but I really don’t give a damn. Cameron Diaz and Kristin Chenoweth need to play sisters in an over-the-top romantic comedy, something that lands somewhere in between Apatowland and Farrellyville.

Chenoweth and Diaz might not look exactly alike in pictures, but on-screen their looks, mannerisms and personalities really match up. Plus, chicks adore them and most guys would jump out of a moving vehicle for a chance at a date with either. Pair up the Diaz of There’s Something About Mary and the Chenoweth of Pushing Daisies and that’s a lot of blonde spunk. Have them be deranged sisters fighting over the same guy. Would it be Citizen Kane? No, probably not. But the two would be a perfect match to play a pair of hothead, hottie sisters who are aging and desperate to get married, damn near killing each other over one straight-out-of-a-fairy-tale bachelor. Actually, it’s pretty much There’s Something About Harry, but I think it would work for sure.

I really think these two would have great on-screen chemistry and make for one of the funniest female buddy pairings we’ve seen in a long time. Rom-coms are so damn bad nowadays that all you really need is some good chemistry and a good new twist on a proven idea, and — BAM! — you have a hit. Like what you currently see happening in the urban market, women are starving for films targeted at them. That’s why even sh**ball rom-coms tend to do well from time to time.

Cameron would do it — she just did a action-comedy with a slumping Tom Cruise for Christ’s sakes. Kristin would do it — it would be the biggest role of her career. Let’s trade in sappy and stupid for smart-ass and spunky and let the girls have an R-rated comedy romp of their own for once. I’m pretty sure the chicks could drag that highly coveted 18-35 guy demographic to this one, too. Diaz-Chenoweth would make money, and that’s what it’s always been about in Hollywood.

Oh, and if you don’t see the resemblance, check out this pic of Chenoweth…

What more can I say?

Okay, let me get this straight. Michael Mann made the classic ’80s cop series Miami Vice into a feature film in 2006. And Joe Carnahan unveiled his big screen adaptation of the classic ’80s soldiers-turned-mercenaries series The A-Team last week. So, where is the flick based on the classic ’80s detective series Magnum P.I.?

Stuck in developmental hell, no doubt. In 2007, it was announced that bongo-playing pothead and sometimes “actor” Matthew McConaughey would don the signature mustache to portray Thomas Magnum. Thankfully, that project fell apart. McConaughey was great playing himself in Dazed and Confused, but has pretty much sucked in everything else he’s done.

In a recent interview while promoting Killers, Tom Selleck said he would be interested in reprising the role if he were approached. No offense to Selleck, but he’s 65 and while he looks to be in decent shape for his age, we all saw how ridiculous older dudes trying to behave young can be in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Not again, please.

Which brings me to Josh Brolin. One couldn’t help but notice the resemblance between he and Magnum while watching No Country For Old Men, which was set in 1980, the same year the series debuted. The mustache, the .45 caliber handgun, the Vietnam War connection, him being chased by a dog. C’mon, it’s all right there in living color.

Brolin, at 42, is also close in age to Selleck, who was 35 when he first flashed his private detective license. Now, Brolin takes a hit in the height department being only 5’11″ as opposed to Selleck’s 6’3″ frame, but everyone looks taller in the movies. See Al Pacino and Tom Cruise if you need proof.

Physical appearance aside, Brolin’s real benefit is as an actor. He’s been on a hot streak since No Country, which he killed in as the reluctant hero Llewelyn Moss. He followed that up with a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for 2008′s Milk. The comic book adaptation Jonah Hex drops tomorrow, and a key role in the Coen Bros. remake of True Grit is on the way. Needless to say, he’s a busy, busy boy.

Brolin is known mostly for his dramatic and villain roles, but he proved in 1996′s Flirting With Disaster he can also play comedy, which is important to the Magnum character. Selleck was adept at balancing the prankster side with the serious side of Thomas Magnum. Whoever plays the part will need to do the same and Brolin fits the profile. I can definitely see him fuc*ing with Higgins one minute, then shooting the Russian who tortured him in Vietnam the next.

What the hell are the studios waiting for? We all know they will eventually resurrect the Magnum project, so why not get a head start and give Brolin a call? I was a huge fan of the series and although remakes and adaptations normally make me cringe, I would certainly pay to see Brolin as Magnum. Who’s with me?

Because he looks a lot like Heath Ledger, JGL could appear briefly as The Joker in Batman 3 much the same way Scarecrow appeared in The Dark Knight.

I noticed something about Joseph Gordon-Levitt a year ago writing for a now defunct site (Austin Script Guy)…homeboy looks a lot like Heath Ledger.

Tell me he doesn’t? He’s his spitting effing image! For anybody who doubts his acting chops, just go watch 500 Days of Summer, Brick, The Lookout and Mysterious Skin. He’s picking up where Heath left off and becoming one of the “must watch” actors of his generation. Even his turn as Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra made that crapfest worth watching.

That being said, if Christopher Nolan, David Goyer and Co. wanted to bring back the Joker to face Batman again in Batman 3, I think they could do it with JGL. Would he have to fill some whopping effing shoes? You bet. But if there is one young actor who looks like Heath and has his potential, it’s JGL. Remember, we once all doubted Heath’s ability to pull off the Joker. Remember how that played out?

Personally, I would only recommend using JGL as Heath’s Joker briefly, maybe from a cell a la Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs. That way you could use lighting, or a lack thereof, to mask the actor’s differences. Maybe he gives Batman a few clues to track down the Riddler. Hey, the only thing the Joker hates worse than the Caped Crusader is no longer being the biggest game in town. He’d also likely feel like the Riddler was a two-bit rip-off, even though that’s not the case at all. It’s not like Batman couldn’t get into Arkham undetected either.

A lot of people are clamoring for Johnny Depp to take on the Joker after seeing him step in for Heath in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. That’s a bad idea. Why? He couldn’t sink into the role the way JGL could. Let’s face it, most of the moviegoing public still doesn’t know JGL, while most of the world knows Depp — he’s a household name. JGL working with Nolan in this summer’s Inception also makes this seem more feasible. Also, remember that Scarecrow made a cameo in The Dark Knight after serving as one of the main villains in Batman Begins. That certainly lent Gotham authenticity and continuity, so why go away from that strategy now?

I honestly believe that Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the one actor who can pull off reprising Heath Ledger’s Joker. Gutsy statement, but there’s no doubt in my mind. The other thing is, and this is huge, I actually think most fans would approve of this casting choice. Heath was wildly popular, especially following his death, but JGL has a cult following himself. Christopher Nolan, please do us a favor and do what the Dark Knight himself did with the Joker at the end of Batman Begins — “look into it.

We here at FlickSided love to play computer chair casting director. We’ve pegged Chiwetel Ejiofor to play a young Morpheus in a Matrix prequel, picked Michael C. Hall to suit up as the Riddler and even cast the Wizard of Oz reboot. Our latest idea isn’t completely our own, but we’re definitely going to co-sign on the potential casting choice. Joss Whedon recently was signed to direct the upcoming The Avengers movie. It’s been pointed out that a Whedon alum, Firefly‘s Nathan Fillion, would make a great Henry Pym, aka Ant-Man. This is something that needs to happen, and I’ll tell you why.

Fillion has been almost criminally ignored by Hollywood producers. He’s handsome, charming, dashing, funny and fantastic at portraying characters who outwit their opponents, the latter being an absolute must for Pym. If Lucas and Spielberg ever decided to truly relaunch Indiana Jones, he’d be their man. I guess that’s another article for another day, but it illustrates what Fillion is capable of as an actor.

Back to why Fillion would be the perfect Ant-Man. What other actor has chemistry with Whedon and the chops to hang with the likes of Edward Norton and Robert Downey Jr.? Additionally, that actor also needs to have the comedic timing to star in a full-length Ant-Man movie written and directed by Shaun of the Dead helmer Edgar Wright. He’s also played an action hero before, so that’s not an issue at all. Oh, and Ant-Man will almost certainly be in The Avengers. He is one of the founding members and Wright has already met with Whedon — twice. Stan Lee has also confirmed Ant-Man in the summer superhero orgy.

Fillion as Ant-Man seems destined to happen, and I’m sure he’s on Wedon’s short list. Producer Kevin Feige has more than enough star power (Downey, Norton, Scarlet Johansson, etc…) to bring in the casual fans. He had to know this was coming after hiring the director of Firefly, right? Especially with Fillion’s Castle getting picked up for another season. As for Wright, I’m sure he just wants Ant-Man to come off like a bad ass in The Avengers, and it definitely seems like the plan is now to roll out Ant-Man after The Avengers so people will actually know who the hell he is.

Ant-Man’s casting probably going to be a committee decision with Whedon having a ton of influence, so the fans making some noise about Fillion (there’s a Nathan Fillion-Ant-Man Facebook Group now thanks to a buddy of mine) surely won’t hurt his chances. Here’s hoping that the little-known actor will slip into the “smallest” superhero role in The Avengers movie.

Not too long ago, I made the case for Michael C. Hall playing The Riddler in Batman 3. Not only am I certain that Christopher Nolan is going to make the third installment in his Batman trilogy, but I’m also sure he’s going to want to up the ante. To do so, he’s going to once again need more than one villain. Sure, he can cast someone to briefly suit up as the Joker and and play a smaller role while locked up in a straitjacket in an Arkham Asylum padded cell (more on that later). But there’s still room for another of member of that infamous rogues’ gallery. Catwoman, aka Selina Kyle, is the obvious choice.

How do you make Killer Croc come to life? Can you bring a realistic Penguin to the big screen? What about a hyperreal Poision Ivy or Mad Hatter? All of those are going to be tough to pull off, and I’m not sure any of those characters have anywhere near the box audience draw of Catwoman (save maybe the Penguin). Let’s face it; now that we’ve forgotten the corny Halle Berry incarnation of the character, it’s almost a foregone conclusion that Nolan and DC are going to bring Catwoman back to the big screen.

Now that Catwoman is the obvious choice to be the second villain in Batman 3, just who should play the feisty feline?

Angelina Jolie

Is she a distraction? Is she polarizing? The answer could be yes to both. But she’s smokin’ hot, talented, can pull off crazy and it’s believable when she starts kicking ass.

Kate Winslet

While not quite as hot as Jolie, she’s sexy in her own right and arguably the best actress of her generation. Anybody who’s seen Revolutionary Road knows she can turn the intensity up when she needs to. But can she do action?

Marion Cotillard

The French actress has become quite the fan favorite to land the role. While the idea seems fresh, American audiences have yet to see her pull off either action or a villain. Not that I’m betting against her landing the role, especially when she worked with Nolan on Inception.

Penélope Cruz

I wonder how she’d fit with the rest of the cast given her thick accent, but after seeing her timebomb of a performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, this is certainly a captivating notion. If anyone’s as good as Winslet, it’s Cruz.

Emily Blunt

She was almost cast in both Iron Man 2 (until Fox screwed her) and Captain America: The First Avenger. What is she holding out for? The rumor mill says she is holding out specifically for this role. She almost replaced Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes, so you know Nolan likes her.

Chloë Sevigny

She’s probably the most underrated actress in the game, and her and Christian Bale have the exact chemistry (American Psycho) this movie would need to succeed. A dark horse, but I wouldn’t be shocked at all if she were cast as the Cat. One of my favorite picks on this list, box office pull be damned.

Rachel Weisz

There is just something incredible about Rachel Weisz. You can never really put your finger on exactly what that is, but she just has “it.” That’s the same kind of central quality that Catwoman must possess in order for her to get inside Bruce Wayne’s head.

Eva Green

She was just awesome at winning James Bond’s heart and then stabbing him in the back in Casino Royale, a huge picture in its own right, and considering that how could she not be considered here? She also is by no means overexposed (like some of this list) and definitely has “the look.“

Ellen Page

She has a major role in Inception, and if you’ve seen Hard Candy you could definitely see her getting medieval on that Bat ass. She seems young, but so did Heath Ledger when he was cast as the Joker. Consider her a sleeper. She also has previous superhero experience (X-Men: The Last Stand).

Diane Kruger

If casting the role were up to me, I’d be leaning her way heading into the casting calls. She rocked in Inglorious Basterds, still feels fresh and just looks like a Catwoman. Watch out for Kruger; she just could be the favorite nobody’s talking about.

You know the drill by now. New Line and Warner Bros. are both planning loose remakes of The Wizard of Oz, so we’re going to hypothetically cast this yellow-bricked byotch. Here’s the perfect cast to redeliver the fantasy classic (guessing that they’ll use their brains, ignore this tween obsession, stick to its roots and aim for a dark-yet-funny re-imagining of the tale).

The Cowardly Lion: Zach Galifianakis

The actor taking on this role needs to be funny, often serving as the movie’s biggest source of comic relief. He needs to be chubby. He needs to be cute. But he also needs to be able to pull off kooky and, of course, cowardly. Galifianakis is way more talented than he’s typically had the opportunity to show. The bearded funnyman has the charisma to make us almost forget Bert Lahr ever played this role. If The Hangover was Galifianakis’ coming out party, this would be the film where he takes his career to another level.

The Tin Man: Lee Pace

Pace has already played this role once. Well, close enough. In the criminally underrated Pushing Daisies — which kinda feels like Oz — he played a pie-maker whose touch caused death. Sure, he could bring people back to life, but if he didn’t touch them again in 60 seconds and return them to the afterlife somebody else would die. Oh, and if he decided to let them live anyway, he could never touch them again or they would die. Needless to say, he brings his boyhood crush back to life, falls for her, yet can never touch her. This caused him to basically live heartbroken. If you’ve watched the show, you know he is the Tin Man. He’s just so damn likable you can’t help feel for him. One of the two studios would be wise to cast him in what would surely be his breakout role.

The Scarecrow: Rhys Ifans

If you frequent FlickSided often — and why wouldn’t you? — you might have read how Ifans won me over with his career-defining performance as Howard Marks in Mr. Nice. Even though 99.99% of the world hasn’t seen that film, audiences are no strangers to his work. He can currently be seen in Greenberg, will co-star in the final two Harry Potter installments, and has lent memorable roles to comedies such as Little Nicky and Notting Hill. Ifans can clearly play a character who’s seeking a brain — he’s been doing that most of his career. The spindly Welshman just looks scarecrowish. After picturing Ifans as the Scarecrow, it’s been impossible to see anybody else.

The Wizard of Oz: Gary Oldman

He’s old enough, especially with Hollywood makeup, and would give the Wiz the perfect blend of bullshit, charm and wisdom. This also wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen him play a wizard, as he took on the role of Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series. I can definitely see Warner Bros. going back to the well with actors it used in that franchise. Regardless, Oldman can do just about anything, so him pulling off an evil-to-jolly arc would be a walk in the park. Well, maybe not, but his performance would make it look like one.

The Wicked Witch of the West: Emily Blunt

Since I started thinking about this post about two weeks ago, something has happened over and over again. Once I stumbled across the perfect actor or actress for each part, I couldn’t even picture anybody else. Up until I thought of Emily Blunt, I was leaning towards Eva Green for this part. Then I thought of Penelope Cruz, probably just because she’s unbelievably sexy when that Latin temper erupts. As much as I like both Cruz and Green, Blunt would be both funnier and more terrifying. I can’t believe it took me so long to think of her. And I also love Helena Bonham Carter, but please refrain from suggesting her in the comments. She shouldn’t have a monopoly on every creepy female role out there in film’s fantasy realm.

Glenda the Good Witch: Rachel McAdams

I can practically hear everybody suggesting names like Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet, hell, even Kate Bosworth — pick a Kate, any Kate. Anne Hathaway will also be a popular, yet unoriginal, suggestion. But McAdams is my pick. She just has this radiant quality to her that can’t be ignored. She’s also never appeared in a role quite like this, which would make the casting choice feel fresh. At 31, she’s no spring chicken, but you want her to look older than Dorothy and younger than the Wicked Witch. Given who I’ve cast around her, I think she’d fit in well. Who knows, maybe one of the studios will pull a fast one and go with Lady Gaga or something. I never put anything past them nowadays.

Dorothy: Anna Kendrick

You aren’t going to replace Judy Garland (though people will insist with, say, Ellen Page or Natalie Portman). Instead, you have to do what the Batman series did with Heath Ledger’s Joker and go in a completely different direction. Anna Kendrick is an amazing young actress, and one who can definitely play considerably younger than her age (24). That’s especially true given that the rest of this hypothetical cast is older, which would make her appear even younger. Alice in Wonderland and Harry Potter both worked leaning on unknown stars, but why take a chance when you have an amazing actress like Kendrick to go to? I don’t know if any actress deserves a breakout starring role more than Kendrick right now. She’d own as Dorothy. Especially if the rumor is true and, like Alice, they decide to cast an older Dorothy.

Christopher Nolan is coming back to do to a sequel to The Dark Knight and make his Batman series a trilogy. That’s good news, because there’s at least one villain left who is tailor made for Nolan’s style — the Riddler. Gary Oldman has even hinted that the Riddler will be the baddie in the third installment. If Nolan was born to bring a Zodiac-style Riddler to the screen, Michael C. Hall was born to play that character. Anyone who’s seen his work as the titular character on Dexter knows that.

Imagine this scenario: Commissioner Gordan and the rest of Gotham City’s finest continue to hunt public enemy No. 1 — the Dark Knight himself. If that wasn’t enough for the Caped Crusader to handle, he also has a new archenemy — the Riddler. While the Joker thrived in the spotlight, the Riddler lurks in the shadows. If the Joker was a dog chasing cars, the Riddler is something more camouflaged, more cannibalistic. He’s the praying mantis.

A casting choice that fits like a glove.

Speaking of Dexter, picture the Ice Truck Killer meets Alex from A Clockwork Orange. Batman would have to track down this ghost of killer while he’s on the run from the law. Picture a room wrapped in plastic with Alfred on the table. How do you defeat the smartest, most-sociopathic opponent you’ve faced with one arm tied behind your back? Even Batman would have a tough time solving that riddle.

Hall is a brilliant actor who’s mastered the nuanced art of acting clever, crazy and calm simultaneously. A serene serial killer seems like an oxymoron, but Hall has been pulling it off for four seasons on Showtime. If there is one actor who can take where Heath Ledger left off and up the ante, it’s Golden Globe winner Hall. Additionally, he’s got a great sense of comedic timing. There isn’t much that could possibly be more difficult acting-wise than making an audience chuckle while playing a serial killer, but Hall does just that and does it routinely.

I’m clearly not the first person to think this as there is actually a Michael C. Hall as the Riddler in Nolan’s Batman Facebook page. That’s proof that Batman fans would get behind this casting choice. He sure the hell beats David Tennant. That guy is better suited to play Bilbo Baggins.

Hall is the Riddler. No different than how American Psycho served as Christian Bale’s Batman audition, Hall has been auditioning for this role for years as the star of Dexter. Christopher Nolan, there’s one sure-fire way to keep the momentum of The Dark Knight going. As you gear up for Batman 3, cast Michael C. Hall as the Riddler.

Word out of Hollywood is the long dormant Kurt Cobain biopic project is back in play. Academy Award nominated writer/director Oren Moverman (The Messenger) is rumored to be in negotiations to take the reigns. Who knows if anything will come of this, but it’s a move in the right direction.

We here at FlickSided love to roll out the casting couch, so we felt this would be an opportune time to delve into who we think might have the chops to portray the talented but troubled grunge rocker. Here are five candidates who fit the bill.

Michael Pitt

The obvious choice would be Pitt, since he pretty much played Cobain in Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, which was loosely based on Cobain’s final days of life. The physical resemblance is uncanny, and Pitt’s acting abilities are not in question. However, this has a been there done that feel to it. Might be better to see a fresh face tackle the role.

Colin Farrell

Probably a touch too old, but if you saw Farrell kill it as a country music star in last year’s wonderful Crazy Heart, you could definitely see him as Cobain. His emotional acting style and penchant for playing dark brooding types would do well in capturing Cobain’s tortured soul.

Lou Taylor Pucci

We included Pucci as a dark horse candidate on our list of potential Spider-Mans. Well, he’d be a longshot here too, but his grunge-like looks could serve him and the movie well. He was amazing in 2005′s Thumbsucker and his profile would receive a major boost if he was cast.

Spike Jonze

An oddball selection for sure, but the boyish Jonze is eccentric and gifted enough to pull if off. He hasn’t done much in front of the camera since his breakthrough in Three Kings, but he was the best thing in that movie. Would he do it? Doubtful. Would he even be considered? No way. Still, you gotta admit, he’d be fun to watch.

Leonardo DiCaprio

If the filmmakers wanna go big, then the best and brightest in the game is the pick. He’d have to grow out his hair and drop some weight, but Leo would make an excellent Cobain. If any actor could reach the core of one of rock’s most enigmatic personalities, it would be DiCaprio. His talents and commitment are unlimited.

We know that Brad Pitt and Summit Entertainment are producing a script by Charlie Hunnam called Vlad, based on the life of Vlad III, aka Vlad the Impaler, aka Dracula. We know that it will be heavy metal compared to Summit’s poppy vampire hit Twilight. But what we don’t know is who will be playing Vlad. The O.G. neck-biter only lived to be about 45, so that narrows down the field right there. Considering the script’s style and the titlular character’s age/look, here are six great choices to play Vlad.

Adrien Brody

I’m just waiting for this guy to get a chance to play a baddie, instead of the typical downtrodden, reluctant hero role he’s been typecast as. He’d really sink his teeth into this role — literally. He would have to be near the top of any casting director’s list for this role.

Colin Farrell

Who better to play one of the original bad boys than the reigning bad boy champ of Hollywood? Sure, he’s flopped in franchises like Daredevil and the underrated Miami Vice, but anyone who has seen In Bruges or Tigerland knows that this is one Irishman who can act his arse of.

Edward Norton

Norton can do just about anything — he’s like a young Gary Oldman. He also has underrated box office appeal (I blame Robin Williams for Death to Smoochy). This isn’t a stretch at all — Ed would kill as the prince of the undead.

Joaquin Phoenix

Screw his recent life crisis — this guy plays one badass heel. Remember Gladiator? Remember that bloodthirst he displayed when he stuck his tongue out during the gladiator games? If he still has it — and our guess is that he does — he would be a great pick to pull off the man behind the Dracula legend.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers

The star of Match Point and The Tudors deserves better than playing wingman to a washed-up Travolta. He’s shown the ability to still be likable even while playing a unlikeable character, something the Vlad character would need. He also is somewhat unknown as an actor, so he would give the vampire flick that “new” aura.

Johnny Depp

Here’s another standout actor who hardly ever gets to play a true villain. After all, even John Dillinger and Sweeney Todd are much closer to being anti-heroes. Depp always shines in period pieces, and this one could nab him a nomination if done right. I’m seeing a critical reaction similar to what Denzel received for Training Day. He’s almost too old, but Depp looks young for his age and is young in spirit.
