A creepy thriller set in the world of ballet.

Director Darren Aronofsky’s highly anticipated thriller Black Swan opens today. If the early buzz is on point, it should be a leading contender at next year’s Oscars. I’ve purposely avoided most of the teasers, trailers and preview articles so as not to spoil the mystery. However, I’ve been privy to enough details to know it’s a flick worth seeing. Here are ten reasons why you should dip into your wallet to check out Black Swan.

10. That klepto Winona Ryder is in it – Remember when Winona was the “it girl” in Hollywood? I’ve done way too many drugs since then to recall myself, but at one time she was in everything and cute as a button. Now she’s pushing 40 and has been relegated to minor roles like playing Spock’s mommy in the Star Trek reboot. Still single, she recently declared she’s in the market for a husband. Maybe she can steal one from another woman.

9. Aronofsky’s films always look awesome – He’s only helmed four previous flicks, but each of them is a visual marvel. He knows where to place a camera and when to move it. If the early images are any indication, it appears he nailed the dark creepy atmosphere to perfection.

8. It’s about ballet – No, seriously. How many ballet plots have you seen on the big screen? I dig movies that explore worlds I know nothing about and I sure as sh*t know nada about ballet, except the lads and ladies have to wear tights and dance on their tippy toes.

7. Black swans are cool – The charcoal colored plumage. The scarlet red beak. The long, majestic neck. It’s a beautiful animal to behold, symbolizing guile and sensuality.

6. Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis share a love scene – Call me superficial, but watching a couple smokin’ hot brunettes lock lips and roll around naked is bonerific. To be completely honest, I’d pay twice the price of admission to get a gander Nat and Mila go lesbian. Here’s hoping it’s not ruined with pesky body doubles.

5. Two words: Vincent Cassel – All you subtitle haters are probably unfamiliar with Cassel’s work. Too bad. The Paris-born thespian has been killin’ it since 1995′s La Haine. If you’re not squeamish, watch Irreversible and Sheitan to see Cassel at his very best. He’s also hitched to the gorgeous Monica Bellucci. Lucky guy.

4. It’s only 107 minutes – I dunno about you, but I’m getting perturbed by all these needlessly overlong movies. Bigger ain’t always better when it comes to run-time. The ability to tell a complete story in less than two hours seems to be a lost art.

3. It’s really weird – By all accounts, Black Swan is one strange trip. Cassel even compared it to the early films of David Cronenberg. Excellent. If you’re bored with all the cookie cutter choices at the multiplex, then this should be right in your wheelhouse.

2. Two words: Mila Kunis – My fingers are crossed this will catapult the very capable and very sexy Kunis into A-list territory. She’s done comedy and action, so I’m intrigued to discover how she handles drama.

1. Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis share a love scene – Did I mention this already? Well, it’s worth reiterating. Call me sleazy, but watching a couple raven-haired lovelies grope and fondle one another is erectastic.

Normally a movie about ballet would send me running for the guillotine, but not when said movie is directed by Darren Aronofsky and stars Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. Hell, I’ll wear a tutu to the premiere to show my support. No, really. My ex-girlfriend left a purple one behind after I gave her the heave-ho. We enjoyed role-playing now and again. In this particular scenario, I was the stern ballet instructor and she was the disobedient student. It involved rope and Vaseline, but for legal reasons I can’t divulge any more information. Back on topic, here’s the trailer for Black Swan. It looks intriguing in a Single White Female kind of way. (Psst… Portman and Kunis do the nasty in this flick.)

Scott Tunstall, the site’s co-editor, and myself have been e-mailing each other back and forth about why Superman Returns sucked and how to effectively reboot the Supes franchise, something that is a mortal lock to happen. Now, we aren’t set on a story, although Superman: Birthright seems like a natural fit. Here’s what we are set on: a better script and a better cast. Now, we aren’t going to dive into the script here — although if we did we’d start by having Clark and Lex having more of a backstory, not to mention Supes throwing at least a punch — but we are going to re-cast the franchise. As DC and Warner Bros have learned from their stellar second Batman franchise, the key is not only who plays the lead but also who surrounds that lead. We think the cast of the next Superman franchise needs to be super all the way around, and here’s a cast that would be.

Re-Casting Superman

Clark Kent/Superman – Zachary Quinto

He’s carried Heroes, nailed Spock, cracked us up over at Funny Or Die, and now it’s time for a date with the cape. He doesn’t look exactly like Christopher Reeve, and that’s a good thing — nobody can fill those shoes. At the same time, he looks enough like all the previous incarnations of Superman and doesn’t come off like a pussy (I’m looking at you, Brandon Routh). He can be dorky enough to play off Kent, but at the same time he has the chops to pull of Superman. Routh was a good Kent, but didn’t cut it as Supes. After Quinto was suggested, we didn’t even consider anybody else. That’s how perfect he is for this role.

Lex Luthor – Sean Penn

I love Kevin Spacey, and he usually plays a great villain, but we just didn’t buy him as Superman’s arch nemesis. Sean Penn could take the campy character played by Gene Hackman and Spacey and take him in a brand new direction, similar to what Heath Ledger did with the Joker character. Penn also might be, along with Daniel Day-Lewis, the best actor of his generation, so that is also worth mentioning. Edward Norton would also make a fine choice, but Marvel would likely never allow their mean, green money-making machine to “suit” up for DC.

Lois Lane – Mila Kunis

Kate Bosworth was just about the worst pick for Lois Lane that Bryan Singer and Co. could have made. Kunis is hot, she’s brunette, she’s funny (like Margot Kidder was) and, as we saw in The Book of Eli, she’s also strong. Kick Kate and her Mary Kate physique to the curb and sign up Mila. She’d be perfect. We also felt Rebecca Hall of Vicky Cristina Barcelona fame would make a fine Lois.

Perry White – Dustin Hoffman

We also considered Hackman here as an homage, but Hoffman would be the finest White ever. Stranger Than Fiction was his audition, and he knocked it out of the park. His involvement alone would give the film credibility, much like Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine have the Batman franchise reboot.

Jimmy Olsen – Paul Dano

Dano is one of the more underrated young actors in the game today, and a natural fit for Jimmy Olsen. He’d be much more than just a talking plot device who provided some extra comic relief. He was amazing in both Little Miss Sunshine and There Will be Blood, and has displayed incredible range and versatility. Anton Yelchin of Star Trek and Emile Hirsch of Milk would also be good choices, but adding Dano to the rest of this cast would be like John Lithgow’s addition to the already-stellar cast of Dexter — just not even fair.
