The 82nd Golden Globes will air on CBS for the first time on January 5 and stream on Paramount+. This is the first of many big awards shows set to lead the charge over the next few months, heading into the Oscars. Today, I share my predictions on the big movie categories and who will take home the Globe.

The Golden Globes voting body hasn't been shy about awarding films that don't typically translate into Oscar wins. That said, it was a significant jump-start last year for Oppenheimer, which went on to sweep the Oscars. This season doesn't quite have that juggernaut yet, meaning several of these categories have wide-open races. I share my predictions in the big categories.

82nd Golden Globes Predictions

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

THE BRUTALIST (A24)
A COMPLETE UNKNOWN (Searchlight Pictures)
CONCLAVE (Focus Features)
DUNE: PART TWO (Warner Bros. Pictures)
NICKEL BOYS (Orion Pictures / Amazon MGM Studios)
SEPTEMBER 5 (Paramount Pictures)

It is a two-movie race between The Brutalist and Conclave, and I am leaning toward Conclave taking its first big win of award season. This would lead to a big shift in the odds as it heads into the Oscar race.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

WICKED
L to R: Cynthia Erivo is Elphaba and Ariana Grande is Glinda in WICKED, directed by Jon M. Chu

ANORA (NEON)
CHALLENGERS (Amazon MGM Studios)
EMILIA PÉREZ (Netflix)
A REAL PAIN (Searchlight Pictures)
THE SUBSTANCE (MUBI)
WICKED (Universal Pictures)

Will the Golden Globes feel a little Wicked? That is quite possibly the biggest question we are asking regarding predictions. Anora is the frontrunner, but I am predicting that the Globes will look for that social media impact and award Wicked the Best Motion Picture in Musical or Comedy.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

003b_ACU_RS-FIRST-LOOK_3R2_17x11

ADRIEN BRODY (THE BRUTALIST)
TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET (A COMPLETE UNKNOWN)
DANIEL CRAIG (QUEER)
COLMAN DOMINGO (SING SING)
RALPH FIENNES (CONCLAVE)
SEBASTIAN STAN (THE APPRENTICE)

How does it feel, how does it feel? To be on your own? I feel like I am alone, standing on an island, saying that the Timothee Chalamet Oscar run is starting at the Golden Globes. Chalamet locks in his first big win of the year, taking home his first Globe. The one person who could play spoiler is Adrien Brody.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

AMY ADAMS (NIGHTBITCH)
CYNTHIA ERIVO (WICKED)
KARLA SOFÍA GASCÓN (EMILIA PÉREZ)
MIKEY MADISON (ANORA)
DEMI MOORE (THE SUBSTANCE)
ZENDAYA (CHALLENGERS)

What a star-studded lineup that features past Globe winners, a few newcomers, and a frontrunner looking to ride the wave to the Oscars. Mikey Madison has been collecting wins through many critic groups. However, does Cynthia Erivo make noise with her performance? Will the Globes shock the world and award Demi Moore? While both could happen, I foresee Madison taking home the Globe.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

HERETIC_COMP_2
Heretic Production Still

JESSE EISENBERG (A REAL PAIN)
HUGH GRANT (HERETIC)
GABRIEL LABELLE (SATURDAY NIGHT)
JESSE PLEMONS (KINDS OF KINDNESS)
GLEN POWELL (HIT MAN)
SEBASTIAN STAN (A DIFFERENT MAN)

The biggest toss-up from this entire show comes within this category. I can see anyone from Eisenberg to Grant to Powell to Stan winning the Globe. When it comes down to it, I look at the film that has more nominations across the board, and that is A Real Pain, which favors Jesse Eisenberg. However, give me the shock of the night with Hugh Grant winning for his psychological warfare of a performance in Heretic.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE

SELENA GOMEZ (EMILIA PÉREZ)
ARIANA GRANDE (WICKED)
FELICITY JONES (THE BRUTALIST)
MARGARET QUALLEY (THE SUBSTANCE)
ISABELLA ROSSELLINI (CONCLAVE)
ZOE SALDAÑA (EMILIA PÉREZ)

It is a two-woman race between Zaldana and Grande, and Zaldana is heavily favored to win the Oscar. While there is a strong likelihood that Zalda will win the Globe, I am going with an upset here, continuing my theme that it will be a Wicked-night with Ariana Grande winning Best Supporting Actress.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE

YURA BORISOV (ANORA)
KIERAN CULKIN (A REAL PAIN)
EDWARD NORTON (A COMPLETE UNKNOWN)
GUY PEARCE (THE BRUTALIST)
JEREMY STRONG (THE APPRENTICE)
DENZEL WASHINGTON (GLADIATOR II)

Kieran Culkin won a Golden Globe one year ago for his performance in Succession and could add another win to his belt for his supporting performance in A Real Pain. I have Culkin winning the Globe with Guy Pearce playing the spoiler.

BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE

Brady Corbet

JACQUES AUDIARD (EMILIA PÉREZ)
SEAN BAKER (ANORA)
EDWARD BERGER (CONCLAVE)
BRADY CORBET (THE BRUTALIST)
CORALIE FARGEAT (THE SUBSTANCE)
PAYAL KAPADIA (ALL WE IMAGINE AS LIGHT)

The Best Director race seems like a two-headed monster between Sean Baker and Brady Corbet. Brady Corbet's direction is more flashy, and because of that, I have him winning the Globe. If you are looking for someone to play spoiler, Edward Berger could make things happen with his direction in Conclave.

BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE

JACQUES AUDIARD (EMILIA PÉREZ)
SEAN BAKER (ANORA)
BRADY CORBET, MONA FASTVOLD (THE BRUTALIST)
JESSE EISENBERG (A REAL PAIN)
CORALIE FARGEAT (THE SUBSTANCE)
PETER STRAUGHAN (CONCLAVE)

Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes lumps Original and Adapted Screenplay into one category. Much like the Best Director race, this is an Anora vs. The Brutalist, and I have Sean Baker winning this battle. If you are looking for a potential upset, give me Jesse Eisenberg.
