We’re rapidly approaching Valentine’s Day. As we do, we’re going to see an uptick in films about relationships that are meant to get into the spirit of the holiday. But not all those films are conventional romantic comedies.
That’s the case with Love Hurts, a new seasonal release that drops in theaters on February 7. Based on the trailer, it’s going to be one heck of a ride.
The film centers on Marvin (Ke Huy Quan), a mild-mannered real estate agent. He’s quiet, friendly, and great at what he does. But what he does now isn’t what he always did. And when his past catches up with him, chaos ensues.
It’s a simple set up and you get the sense of where the film is going in the two and a half minutes of the trailer. It’s a fun starring turn for Quan, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All At Once. In that film he at times played mild-mannered and at times played and action role. It looks like we’re getting more of the same in this new film.
But Quan isn’t the only Oscar winner to make time for the film. His co-star here is Ariana DeBose. She’s had an interesting last few years, with films ranging from action epics like Argylle to animated films like Disney’s Wish. But it was for the 2021 Steven Spielberg directed re-make of West Side Story that she won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress.
Seeing these two paired together should make for a lot of fun on screen. In just a few sequences in the trailer it’s clear they have good screen chemistry and make for a good pairing in this new action adventure.
Also catching my eye in the trailer is another of the supporting players, Marshawn Lynch. The former NFL player has made an inroad in acting in recent years, turning in a great supporting performance in the comedy Bottoms. Here, he looks like he’s applying that same style with a few quick sequences playing off Quan that are a lot of fun.
If you’re looking for something a bit more action-packed this Valentine’s Day, Love Hurts hits the spot. It also clocks in at a crisp 83 minutes, making for a breezy trip to the theater. Be sure to check the film out when it opens on Friday, February 7.
