He's probably been made fun of for it a thousand times before, and it never ceases to amaze onlookers that Adam Sandler will dress like a basketball coach for any occasion. At this year's Oscars, the situation was no different.
Alongside his colleagues and cohorts, Sandler stuck out like a sore thumb, wearing a bubblegum blue hoodie, basketball shorts, and sneakers. He attracted so much attention due to the refined attire everyone else wore, which drew the ire of host Conan O'Brien.
Midway into his opening monologue, O'Brien notices a blue blob standing out amidst a sea of tuxedos and dresses. He calls Sandler out, attempting to shame him for dressing down for the occasion. Sandler, of course, defends himself with a witty retort—making some very valid points. The Happy Gilmore actor made it a point to Conan that he shouldn't criticize what he's wearing, especially in front of his peers. Mind you, it was merely a skit.
Despite walking off in a huff—partially ejected from the venue—Sandler participated freely in the bit. Conan O'Brien explains in a later interview that they arranged for the "clothing spot" in anticipation of the event.
According to the talk show host, he reached out to his buddy with an idea, to which Sandler replied with an even better proposal. Unsurprisingly, it included a believable premise for Sandler to dress in his most comfortable attire: a hoodie and shorts. He's worn tuxedos and proper clothing to fancy venues, but Sandler is also well known for dressing down when he can.
What's unclear is if Timothee Chalamet was in on the joke, too. Sandler made a direct path to the Dune actor for a quick hello, concluding with one of his adorable "chalamew."
For anyone who doesn't know, Nikki Glaser joked about the way his name sounds while presenting at the 2025 Golden Globes. Glaser pointed out that Chalamet's name is more like a funny sound that one of Adam Sandler's characters would make than an actor's surname. And to cap things off, she called on Sandler in the audience to complete the bit.

Since then, the way Sandler pronounces Chalamet's name has spread online like wildfire. It might even be a meme by now. Sandler did make one exception to pronouncing the Dune: Part Two actor's with a funny accent. He refrained from doing so while introducing Chalamet during an SNL performance. Of course, everyone in the audience probably wanted Sandler to do it.
The 2025 Oscars are available for streaming on ABC and Hulu.
