Another (!) Oscar-nominated actor is considering a return to the MCU
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen better days. The franchise has struggled to get its footing after the high note that was Avengers: Endgame (2019), so it makes sense that the studio behind the franchise has decided to get the proverbial band back together.
Marvel has decided to bring back the directors of Avengers: Endgame, Joe and Anthony Russo, to help Avengers: Doomsday. The studio has decided to bring back Robert Downey, Jr., the actor who kicked everything off in 2008, to play Doctor Doom. And now, Josh Brolin has weighed in on whether he would consider returning to play Thanos.
Josh Brolin is open to reprising Thanos
Brolin's CG-aided performance was a big part of why Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Endgame were so effective. He gave the menacing villain heart, and a character arc that won over even the most staunch MCU critics. Two different versions of Thanos died in Endgame, but the MCU has proven that it will can play fast and loose with timelines if it means bringing back a fan favorite.
Josh Brolin is down to do so. He told Collider that he loved his time with the MCU, and would be more than willing to return. The one condition? It would have to make sense within the story. Thanos is such an iconic character that he would not shoehorned into just any story, and Brolin recognizes this:
"It’s what in his mind fits, what in my mind fits. Thanos has to fit if you’re going to bring him back."
Brolin is eager to reconnect the Russo brothers
Brolin also specified that the Russo brothers would have to be involved in order for him to be want to resurrect the character. He worked alongside the duo on both of his Avengers outings, and told the outlet that he would "do anything that the Russos wanted me to do."
It would be utterly surreal to see Brolin's Thanos going against Downey's Doom, but given the current state of the MCU, we can't completely rule it out.
