Beerfest sequel gets a potentially positive update from Broken Lizard creative team

Despite a two-decade gap between now and the initial release, Broken Lizard still wants to make Potfest. Will it happen, though?

Broken Lizard, the creative minds behind Super Troopers, Beerfest, and Club Dread, are trying to get a sequel to one of their most popular movies made. The comedy team of Kevin Heffernan, Steven Lemme, Jay Chandrasekhar, Erik Stolhanske, and Paul Soter hasn't produced too many sequels, but things are brewing.

In an interview with the Illuminerdi team to discuss Quasi, Broken Lizard also spoke about a follow-up to Beerfest. The site's interviewer asked whether they're involved in Potfest, and two members of the comedy troupe revealed talks with Warner Bros. are underway. Chandrasekhar concluded their comments by mentioning they're in the legal process; that's a positive update.

While the context of talks between Broken Lizard and Warner Bros. is unknown, their discussions presumably detail how much of the illicit substance will be shown onscreen. Because while marijuana has lost some of the stigma that it used to carry, a movie centered around how much weed five guys can smoke will be difficult for a big-budget studio to market to general audiences. It's worth mentioning that while R-rated movies are in Warner Brothers' catalog, there aren't many centered stoners. The Harold And Kumar movies are an exception, but the studio has stepped away from their brand in recent years. Even the last chapter to cap off the trilogy replaced much of the stoner comedy with dramatic collisions between the two leads.

In any case, those talks could continue for months, then there's the pre-production of negotiating contracts with actors, touring/leasing locations to shoot from, the actual shoots themselves, and then finally, post-production. So, it may be several years before Potfest hits theaters.

The Broken Lizard team teased another project that caught fans' attention. They mentioned crossovers between their films—one of them being Super Troopers and Beerfest. The comedy troupe even joked about potential encounters between characters from their respective cinematic worlds. They namedropped Finkelstein and Mac working off of each other. Finkelstein is the lab scientist from Beerfest, while Mac is the overly laidback cop from Super Troopers.

Mind you, there are no concrete plans for that potential crossover. Broken Lizard's comedians merely mentioned one as something fans have pitched to them over the years. It's not too preposterous to consider, although the joint universe trope is starting to get overplayed in Hollywood, meaning longtime fans might view a crossover as pandering to the lowest common denominator when Broken Lizard has remained consistent with their unique brand of comedy.

Super Troopers and Quasi are currently streaming on Hulu. The Slammin Salmon and Beefest can be found on Tubi. Club Dread isn't currently streaming. Super Troopers 2 is streaming on Fubo TV and Sling.
